Civil War air-raid shelters unearthed in Barcelona, polls show a majority in Spain oppose Iran war, plotting jihadist arrested in Mallorca, and more news on Thursday March 26th.

Spanish Civil War air-raid shelters unearthed in Barcelona

Police in the Catalan capital have confirmed the discovery of three entrances to Spanish Civil War air-raid shelters, uncovered during renovation work on Barcelona’s Sants-Montjuïc district.

“It’s a large shelter ,” Ariadna Muñoz, head of the archaeological intervention, told reporters after the inspection.

The teams have determined that the space, measuring over 200 square metres , was built in 1938.

Muñoz explained that inside they found latrines with access to running water, electrical installations in the ceiling, a jug, brick walls and galleries, which they could not enter for security reasons as they are not built with brick.

According to Barcelona City Hall, the city had more than 1,300 air-raid shelters inventoried during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

Although the vast majority disappeared or were sealed after the war, some remain and have been restored to allow visits, such as Shelter 307 (Poble-sec), the one in Plaça del Diamant (Gràcia) or the air-raid shelter in Plaça de la Revolució.

Spain arrests jihadist in Mallorca planning ‘lone wolf’ attack

A joint Spanish-Moroccan police operation led to the arrest on Wednesday of three suspected members of a jihadist cell.

The men were allegedly planning a terror attack in Spain using a lone wolf terrorist, according to authorities in Rabat.

Two of the arrests took place in the Moroccan city Tangier, while the third was made in Palma de Mallorca.

According to the investigation, the group’s leader – the jihadist arrested in Mallorca – is believed to have planned an attack in Spain.

Those arrested in Tangiers were involved in “financing and providing logistical support to fighters” of the Islamic State (ISIS) operating in the sub-Saharan Sahel region and Somalia.

73 percent of Spaniards oppose US and Israeli intervention in Iran

Spaniards overwhelmingly disapprove of the US and Israeli offensive against Iran, new survey data has revealed.

Some 73 percent of Spaniards polled reject the military intervention, which is now approaching its one-month mark, according to a new poll by DYM for Spanish digital outlet 20minutos.

Just 12.6 percent of those polled viewed the intervention favourably.

Over 1.5 million Spaniards miss work as absenteeism rises

Absenteeism in the workplace in Spain rose in 2025, matching record figures from the first quarter of 2022 after the pandemic.

Absenteeism ended last year with a rise of 0.5 percent, reaching 7.1 percent overall. According to Randstad Research, cited here by Spanish state broadcaster RTVE, this means that almost 1.6 million people did not turn up for work last year in Spain, bringing the rate to an all-time high.

Around 1.24 million people cited illness as the reason for missing work, and analysis also shows a 6 percent increase in temporary sick leave compared to the third quarter of 2025.
