Real Betis struck deep into stoppage time to deny Real Madrid in a dramatic 1-1 draw, as Hector Bellerin’s late intervention capped a night where the hosts’ persistence was eventually rewarded.
Madrid had led since the first half through Vinicius Junior, but their failure to extend that advantage proved costly as Betis’ pressure built throughout the second period before a chaotic finale in Seville.
Vinicius strikes as Madrid make early control count
The visitors began with their usual control, dominating possession and forcing Betis onto the back foot in the opening exchanges. Vinicius and Kylian Mbappé both looked lively, stretching the home defence with their movement and pace.
After a series of early warnings, Madrid took the lead in the 17th minute. Federico Valverde’s powerful strike from distance proved too hot for goalkeeper Alvaro Valles to hold, and Vinicius reacted quickest, arriving to convert the rebound from a tight angle.
The away side continued to probe, and Mbappe came close to doubling the lead when he volleyed wide after a long pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Yet, despite their control, Madrid could not fully capitalise. As the half wore on, their intensity dipped, allowing Betis to grow into the contest.
The hosts began to create openings of their own, with Antony and Abdessamad Ezzalzouli both testing Andriy Lunin.
Madrid’s goalkeeper was called into action late in the half, producing a sharp double save to deny first Cedric Bakambu and then Antony, preserving his side’s slender advantage going into the break.

As the clock ticked down, Betis continued to press. Antony fired wide after drifting into space, while Madrid’s defence was increasingly stretched. Lunin again proved vital, tipping over a dangerous effort as the pressure mounted.

Madrid seemed to be edging towards an important win, slowing the tempo and retaining possession to frustrate their opponents. But deep into stoppage time, the game took one final twist.
A loose sequence inside the Madrid penalty area saw the ball ricochet between players after Antony’s initial involvement. When a partial clearance fell invitingly to Bellerin, the right-back reacted instinctively, driving a low shot through a crowded box and into the net.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters and underlined the momentum Betis had built throughout the second half.
For Madrid, it was a frustrating conclusion. Having controlled large parts of the first half, they lacked the cutting edge to put the game beyond reach and were ultimately punished.
