Comedy brothers Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans have shared that a sequel to their divisive buddy cop comedy White Chicks, released in 2004, relies on whether or not their upcoming, other comedy sequel, Scary Movie 6, is well-received and acclaimed for its style of comedy.
White Chicks was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, the second-born in the Wayans family tree, who shares co-writing credits with Andy McElfresh and Michael Anthony Snowden. Marlon and Shawn provided story contributions as well as starring in the film as two Black FBI agent brothers tasked with trapping a socialite kidnapper by posing as escorts to two white, wealthy sisters on a high-profile and publicised weekend in Beverly Hills. After their initial task of getting the spoiled sisters to their hotel backfires, the brothers pose as the sisters using whiteface to catch the kidnapper directly.
“I’ll put it this way: we’re game,” Marlon shared when asked by Entertainment Tonight. “We want to know if people want to come out and laugh, and [if] they come see Scary Movie…” then the follow-up could “definitely” happen.
Shawn then clarified confirmation by stating, “If [Scary Movie 6] does well, a White Chicks 2 can happen.”
Despite initial negative reviews and five nods at the Golden Raspberry Awards, White Chicks is now hailed as a cult classic. A sequel was initially reported in 2018, with an update coming in recently.
Scary Movie 6 will be the sixth installment in Miramax’s Scary Movie franchise, which consists of five spoof films which mock popular horror releases of the contemporary years, the genre’s criticised cliches and pop culture of the time’s release. The first film was released in 2000 and directed by Keenan Wayans, with Shawn and Marlon writing, as well as appearing in the film. The Wayans appeared in the sequel released in 2001 before leaving the franchise for the third, fourth and fifth releases, and have now returned for the sixth.
