The build-up to the much-anticipated clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians has taken an emotional turn, with fans across the country eagerly waiting for one question to be answered — will MS Dhoni finally make his IPL 2026 debut? As the two giants prepare to lock horns at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on May 2, anticipation around Dhoni’s return continues to dominate the narrative.

Injury setback delays MS Dhoni’s IPL 2026 start

The 44-year-old CSK legend has been sidelined since the beginning of the season after suffering a calf strain during pre-season training. Initially expected to miss only the opening phase, Dhoni’s recovery has taken longer than anticipated. As a result, the five-time IPL-winning captain has been forced to remain on the sidelines, focusing on rehabilitation and controlled practice sessions.

Despite his absence, Dhoni has remained closely involved with the squad, mentoring players and gradually returning to net practice. However, match fitness — particularly his ability to run between the wickets at full intensity — has been the primary concern for the team management.

Mike Hussey provides crucial fitness update regarding Dhoni’s return

Speaking ahead of the high-stakes encounter, CSK batting coach Mike Hussey offered a cautiously optimistic update on Dhoni’s progress. While stopping short of confirming his participation against Mumbai Indians, Hussey indicated that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter is steadily moving towards full fitness.

“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or maybe the next match after that, but he’s progressing really well,” Hussey stated during the pre-match press conference.

The former Australian cricketer emphasized that Dhoni’s core cricketing skills remain intact, with no concerns around his batting or wicketkeeping. Instead, the focus has been on regaining the physical intensity required during match situations, particularly in high-pressure phases of the innings.

Running fitness remains the final hurdle

Hussey highlighted that Dhoni’s recovery has reached a stage where only one key element needs to fall into place — confidence in his running ability.

“He’s been upping his running speeds, and that was probably the sticking point. We’re very confident about his batting and wicketkeeping. It’s just about ensuring he can maintain that running power, especially towards the back end of an innings,” Hussey explained.

In modern T20 cricket, quick singles and sharp running between the wickets often make a decisive difference, particularly in death overs. For a player like Dhoni, who thrives in finishing roles, this aspect becomes even more critical.

Hussey made it clear that the final decision regarding Dhoni’s return will rest entirely with the player himself. The franchise is keen to ensure that the veteran returns only when he feels fully confident in his body.

“As soon as he feels confident in his calf, he’ll give the nod. We’re guided by him at the moment,” Hussey added.
