The 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been far from ideal for two of Mumbai Indians’ biggest stars, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Known for their match-winning abilities, both players have struggled significantly this season, contributing to Mumbai Indians languishing near the bottom of the points table.

Poor form of star cricketers trouble Mumbai Indians

Suryakumar, often regarded as the backbone of MI’s batting lineup, has been going through an uncharacteristic lean phase. In eight matches so far, he has scored just 162 runs at an average of 20.25. His strike rate of 140.87, while decent by ordinary standards, is well below his usual explosive benchmark, making his dip in form even more noticeable.

On the bowling front, Bumrah’s numbers have raised eyebrows across the cricketing world. Widely considered one of the finest death bowlers in modern cricket, he is enduring what many analysts describe as the toughest IPL season of his career. The pacer remained wicketless in his first five matches before finally breaking the drought against Gujarat Titans. With just two wickets in eight games and an economy rate of 8.80, Bumrah has struggled to deliver his usual impact during crucial phases of the innings.

Mahela Jayawardene names MI’s two ‘match winners’

Despite the concerning form of both players, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has thrown his full support behind the duo ahead of their high-stakes clash against Chennai Super Kings.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Jayawardene emphasized the importance of backing experienced players through difficult phases.

“They are match winners, and they are human. They will go through these things, and their character is that they’ll keep coming back and fighting,” said Jayawardene.

He also highlighted the mental aspect of the game, suggesting that players like Suryakumar and Bumrah often put excessive pressure on themselves to deliver in every match.

“The conversation we’re having is not to have too much pressure on themselves because they feel that they should be able to deliver on their own. It’s about reminding them that it’s okay—these things happen. Let’s just keep trying,” Jayawardene added.

The former Sri Lankan captain’s remarks underline MI’s belief in the long-term value of their star performers, even during a challenging campaign.

Fans expect MI to bounce back against CSK

Mumbai Indians will be eager to turn their fortunes around when they face Chennai Super Kings at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. The clash carries added significance after MI suffered a humiliating 103-run defeat to CSK earlier in the season on April 23.

That loss exposed several weaknesses in MI’s setup, including inconsistent batting and ineffective bowling during key moments. However, the team management believes there is still time to regroup and find the right combination.

Interestingly, CSK have also shown vulnerabilities in recent matches, particularly in their death-overs execution. This gives MI a potential opening to stage a comeback.
