– The Munich-based sales agent is launching Mariko Minoguchi’s Alpine adventure thriller starring Nina Hoss and Hannu Salonen’s historical sports drama
The Other Side by Mariko Minoguchi
Beta Cinema is heading to the Marché du Film (12-20 May) of the 79th Cannes Film Festival with two new additions to its Cannes line-up, broadening its market slate with a pair of ambitious European productions currently in post-production. The Munich-based world sales and co-financing company has boarded Mariko Minoguchi’s The Other Side,an Alpine-set adventure thriller toplined by Nina Hoss, and Hannu Salonen’s The Rome Eight, a historical underdog drama inspired by true events and led by Oliver Masucci and Felix Kammerer.
Penned and directed by Minoguchi, whose previous credits include Relativity and Tim Fehlbaum’s The Colony, The Other Side is set in a near-future society still marked by the aftermath of a devastating pandemic. Hoss (known internationally for her work in Tár, Phoenix, Barbara and, more recently, Hedda) plays Hanna, a former doctor who has withdrawn into isolation in the Alpine wilderness after losing her family to a disease. Her fragile, self-imposed solitude is disrupted when she comes across an injured stranger, forcing her to confront questions of survival, trust and moral responsibility.
Shot against a stark mountain backdrop, the film is described as an emotionally charged adventure thriller, combining genre tension with a character-driven exploration of fear and human connection. The cast also includes Precious Mariam Sanusi and Barbara Petritsch. Felix Pflieger (Allegro Pastell) serves as the DoP. The Other Side is being produced by Trimafilm, in co-production with Rundfilm. X-Verleih is set to release the film in Germany towards the end of the year.
Beta Cinema’s second new Cannes market title, The Rome Eight, is helmed by Hannu Salonen, known for the series Oktoberfest: Beer and Blood. The film revisits the story of Karl Adam, the visionary rowing coach who, in post-war Germany, challenged established training methods and turned a group of outsiders into an elite crew. Set against the backdrop of a divided country, Cold War tensions and a society searching for a renewed sense of identity, the drama follows the team’s journey towards its landmark victory at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. The triumph is framed not only as a sporting achievement, but also as a symbol of hope, reconciliation and collective rebirth for a generation still living in the shadow of war.
The ensemble cast is headed by Oliver Masucci (Never Look Away, Dark, Look Who’s Back) and Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front, soon in Frankenstein and Legacy of Spies). Svenja Jung also stars in the film. The Rome Eight is produced by Ninety-Minute Film’s Ivo-Alexander Beck, in co-production with Adams Acht, Sunday Filmproduktion and Majestic Filmproduktion. Majestic will release the film in Germany on 17 September 2026.
The two titles join a Beta Cinema slate that also includes Jyri Kähönen‘s Nordic adventure Operation Napoleon – Tears of the Wolf, I Is Another (working title) with Claes Bang, Trudie Styler’s Rose’s Baby with Antonio Banderas, Antonia Campbell-Hughes’ High End (read news) with Raffey Cassidy, Andrea Riseborough and Guy Pearce; Franz Böhm and Suli Kurban‘s international thriller Keep Her Quiet, omnibus film Each of Us with Diane Kruger (read news), Aku Lohumies’ Lapland War, Jan Komasa‘s The Noise of Time, Lena Stahl‘s The Method, and James Hawes’ The Offing, starring Helena Bonham Carter.
