The upcoming stop-motion film, Wildwood, which is directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Chris Butler, has got its first teaser trailer from Laika.
The film is inspired by the Colin Meloy book of the same title, published in 2011 as a collection inspired by folk stories and fantasy tales, focusing on a young girl’s quest to rescue her baby brother, prompting her to venture into a magical forest filled with fantasy creatures.
Wildwood showcases a whopping voice ensemble cast including Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Richard E. Grant, Awkwafina, Amandla Stenberg, Tom Waits, Charlie Day, Blythe Danner, Arthur Knight, Maya Erskine, Jake Johnson, Tantoo Cardinal, Rob Delaney, Jemaine Clement, Marc Evan Jackson, Len Cariou, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Angela Bassett, and Mahershala Ali.
Laika are the independent stop-motion studio behind the Neil Gaiman adaptation Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link.
“For Wildwood, we’re taking a more customised approach to how we bring the film to audiences, matching partners to the specific needs and ambitions of the project,” Laika’s Chief Marketing and Operations Officer David Burke stated, as shared in Variety. “Partnering with Fathom’s Denver-based team brings national perspective and operational strength to the U.S. release, while working with FilmNation internationally positions the film with scale, reach, and deep expertise in global markets.”
Burke cites the plan as “a strategy” designed with Knight’s adaptation specifically in mind as a way of “preserving Laika’s independence while aligning with world-class collaborators to support the film’s ambition.”
Meloy’s original novel featured on the New York Times Bestseller list under the Children’s Chapter Books for two weeks upon publication, coming in 7th place the first week and 9th the second. It was followed by two sequels, Under Wildwood: The Wildwood Chronicles, Book Two, in 2012 and then Wildwood Imperium in 2014.
Meanwhile, Knight is anticipating the release of his film, Masters of the Universe, which is based on the Mattel character He-Man, starring Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Kristen Wiig, Jared Leto, and Idris Elba.
Wildwood hits cinemas on October 23rd.
