The 48th match of IPL 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium will be remembered for two things: a masterclass in chasing by Chennai Super Kings and a bizarre officiating oversight that has left fans and experts questioning the consistency of technology in cricket. On a night when the capital was lashed by heavy rain and unpredictable gusts, the clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday, took a controversial turn that shifted the momentum of the entire game.

Nitish Rana’s strange wicket sparks major debate during DC vs CSK encounter

The controversy erupted during the 10th over of the Delhi Capitals’ innings. Nitish Rana, who was looking to rebuild the innings alongside Karun Nair, faced Noor Ahmad on the third delivery of the over. Attempting a powerful sweep shot to clear the boundary, Rana mistimed the hit and was caught comfortably by Kartik Sharma. Dejected, the left-hander began his long walk back to the pavilion, with the scoreboard reflecting his dismissal for 15 off 13 balls.

However, social media was soon flooded with a viral clip that turned the dismissal on its head. High-speed replays, which were inexplicably ignored by the on-field umpires, clearly showed that the bails had been dislodged before the ball even reached the bat or Rana attempted the shot.

Under the laws of cricket, the ball should have been declared ‘dead’ the moment the stumps were disturbed without the intervention of the bowler or a fielder during the delivery stride. The cause? Powerful winds. Earlier in the evening, heavy rain had delayed proceedings, followed by gale-force winds that even forced a brief halt in play. Replays suggested these gusts were strong enough to vibrate the LED bails out of their grooves.

Because Sanju Samson (keeping wickets) hadn’t touched the stumps and Rana hadn’t hit them, the “double dismissal”, being caught off a ball that should have been dead, remained a glaring officiating error. The lack of a DRS review or an umpire’s intervention proved costly; DC collapsed shortly after, sliding from 61/4 to a sub-par total.

Sanju Samson’s masterclass guides CSK to a dominant win over DC in IPL 2026

While the Rana dismissal provided the drama, Samson provided the clinical finishing. Chasing a modest target of 156, Chennai Super Kings made a mockery of the Delhi bowling attack, reaching the target in just 17.3 overs to secure an 8-wicket victory.

The Delhi Capitals innings struggled to find rhythm. Despite a late-order flourish from Sameer Rizvi, who remained unbeaten on 40 off 24 balls, and Tristan Stubbs (38 off 31), the top order crumbled against the spin of Ahmad (2/22) and the disciplined pace of Mukesh Choudhary (1/31). DC finished on 155/7 after 20 overs.

In response, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early for 6, but Samson took complete control of the chase. Playing with a mix of elegance and sheer power, Samson smashed 87 off just 52 balls, including 7 fours and 6 massive sixes. He found a steady partner in Kartik Sharma, who contributed a composed 41 off 31 balls. The pair shared an unbeaten 114-run stand that effectively neutralized Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav, who remained wicketless.
