Artistic and acclaimed genre filmmaker Ari Aster has finalised his fifth film, titled Scapegoat, which is now set to star MCU and Jurassic World Rebirth star Scarlett Johansson and have A24 as distributors.
Genre, plot details and additional cast members are yet to be released; however, sources have confirmed the director will share production with Lars Knudsen, as part of Square Peg.
Aster wasted no time in becoming a household and admired name in horror with his 2018 feature debut, Hereditary, a psychological-supernatural thesis on family grief and conflict starring Toni Collette. He then followed this up with 2019’s Midsommar, an intense folk horror centred on a Swedish cult exploiting a young woman (Florence Pugh) and her grief when she joins her partner and his friends on an anthropology trip. Both these releases cemented Aster as a maestro in the Elevated horror format.
In 2023, he released Beau is Afraid, a surrealist-comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix, and then the Cannes release Eddington, which is a satirical neo-Western, starring Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and Emma Stone.
Johansson has a supremely busy 2026: she has her new film, Paper Tiger, playing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which is directed by James Gray and co-stars Adam Driver and Miles Teller; she is currently shooting Mike Flanagan’s remake/reimagining of The Exorcist, before she heads to Gotham City as Gilda Dent, wife to Sebastian Stan’s Harvey Dent alongside Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight in The Batman: Part II; and she lends her voice to Brad Bird’s animated film, Ray Gunn.
She is also set to star in a Jurassic World Rebirth sequel that is currently in pre-production for a 2028 release.
