Edge of Tomorrow 2 is currently not in active development, despite reports to the contrary.
According to Collider, the project was reported to be moving forward with Warner Bros. Pictures earlier this week, but that report has since proven false.
Edge of Tomorrow was released in 2014 and grossed $375 million worldwide from a $175 million budget. It starred Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as Major William Cage and Rita Vrastaski, respectively, in a story about an alien invasion and a time loop. However, it did even better once it reached audiences’ homes, with word of mouth becoming its main source of growth. It’s now seen as a cult hit.
While Blunt has repeatedly said she would be open to returning pending a good script and appropriate timing, it seems Cruise would also likely come back if demand were great enough. Though not ‘officially dead’, it currently has no production timeline, and the studio has said it “still hopes to make the movie in the future”.
Previously in 2024, director Doug Liman explained that he had spent time “trying to crack” the story, but Warner Bros. was keen to see it through. Then, as quickly as it came about, it seemed to disappear. Things were put on hold when Liman’s film Deeper, starring Cruise, took priority. However, this stalled in pre-production.
Blunt currently stars in The Devil Wears Prada 2, while Cruise returns to cinemas this October in Digger, the new film from Alejandro Iñarritu.
