Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a major setback in their IPL 2026 campaign after going down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets in Raipur on Tuesday night. The defeat snapped KKR’s impressive four-match winning streak and left their playoff hopes hanging by the slimmest of margins. While the loss hurt their momentum badly, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side is still mathematically alive in the race for the top four.
The clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium started after a 75-minute delay because of a wet outfield, though the match was completed without any reduction in overs. RCB made full use of the conditions and produced a clinical performance led by a sensational century from Virat Kohli.
Angrish Raghuvanshi shines in KKR’s competitive total
After being asked to bat first, KKR endured a shaky start as both Finn Allen and captain Rahane departed inside the powerplay. With early pressure mounting, young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi stepped up with maturity beyond his years. The talented right-hander stitched together a valuable 68-run partnership with Cameron Green to steady the innings. Green contributed a useful 32 before falling at a crucial stage, but Raghuvanshi continued to anchor the innings confidently.
Later, Rinku Singh provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 49, sharing a brisk 76-run stand with Raghuvanshi for the fourth wicket. Raghuvanshi eventually finished with a classy 71 off 46 deliveries as KKR posted a fighting total of 192/4 in their 20 overs. Despite the strong finish, KKR may have felt they were still 10-15 runs short on a batting-friendly surface.
Virat Kohli’s masterclass leaves KKR stunned
In reply, RCB looked composed from the very beginning of the chase. Once Kohli settled in, the result rarely appeared in doubt. The veteran opener produced one of the finest innings of the season, smashing an unbeaten 105 off just 60 balls to register his ninth IPL century.
Kohli’s innings combined control, aggression, and experience, with boundaries flowing effortlessly all around the ground. He also shared a crucial 92-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, which completely shifted the momentum in Bengaluru’s favour. KKR’s bowlers struggled to contain the scoring rate and failed to pick wickets at regular intervals. RCB eventually chased down the target with five balls remaining, strengthening their grip at the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points.

How KKR can still qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?
Although the defeat has pushed KKR into a difficult position, their campaign is not over yet. Kolkata currently sit on nine points from 11 matches, having registered four wins, six losses, and one no-result earlier in the season against Punjab Kings. That washed-out match could now become extremely important in the playoff race.
For KKR to qualify, they will likely need to win all of their remaining league games. Doing so would take them to 15 points. However, even that may not guarantee qualification because their net run rate remains in the negative. KKR will also need favourable results from other teams, particularly hoping that sides like Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings finish on 14 points or fewer. The equation is challenging, but not impossible. With three games still left to play, Kolkata’s playoff dream survives — though only just.
