Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker recently made a cameo appearance on the dark comedy series, Hacks. Since then, some of their Today co-workers commented on the appearance during a recent episode of their show. During the moment, they also shared some behind-the-scenes information.
Hacks Recently Featured A Fake Newscast From Today, Complete With Savannah Guthrie & Al Roker
Hacks is a dark comedy that premiered on HBO Max in 2021. On the show, Jean Smart plays Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedian. She and her comedy writer, Ava Daniels, played by Hannah Einbinder, navigate the modern comedy industry.
The show’s fifth and final season premiered back in April. As the show comes to an end, with the series finale airing on May 28, viewers were treated to a fake Today broadcast.
During the May 21 episode, Vance and her team saw a comeback show at Madison Square Garden sabotaged. Getting creative, she found herself interrupting a Today news weather broadcast, holding up a sign saying she has news.
As the scene starts, Savannah Guthrie tells Al Roker, who play themselves, “And those northern lights will be visible for the next week. So, Al, maybe we’ll get something of a show.” Roker comments, “Weather’s looking pretty darn good…” It was then that Deborah interrupts, saying, “Can I come in? I have news!”
Craig Melvin Questioned One Line In Particular From One Of His Co-Stars
Roker recognizes Deborah and Guthrie asks if they should let her in. Roker agrees, allowing the scene to cut to Deborah sharing her story. Invested, Roker notes, “So, basically, Deborah, he Ja Rule-d you.” This was a nod to 50 Cent buying several front row tickets to one Ja Rule’s shows in 2018. Deborah agrees, noting, “Exactly. Exactly. What 50 Cent did to Ja Rule.”
Roker and Guthrie continued to share their sympathies with Deborah’s situation. The cameo ended with Guthrie telling viewers, “If you are in the tri-state area, get out to Central Park. See Deborah Vance, the one and only.”

Guthrie and Roken were absent during the May 22 episode of Today, giving them a head start on Memorial Day weekend. Hosts Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer shared their reactions to the moment during the show’s “Pop Start” segment.
Dreyer noted, “I mean, they really went all-in. They were really selling that line.” However, Melvin joked, “Who told Al who Ja Rule was? That’s what I wanna know. Who told him who Ja Rule was? But, OK!” Dreyer also shared some behind-the-scenes information, noting that the two filmed the cameo back in September.
