Madrid to spend €50 million on beautifying building façades
Authorities in the Spanish capital want to rehabilitate apartment blocks built before 1998 and are therefore expanding their funding programme to beautify and improve façades, as approved this Thursday by the Governing Board.
The new call for applications under the Plan Rehabilita will include subsidies for cable removal, antenna relocation, concealment of air conditioning units and clotheslines, and the aesthetic standardisation of awnings, blinds, and railings.
With the €50 million approved this Thursday, the City Council aims to give the oldest buildings in the capital a facelift by eliminating the negative visual impact on their facades or roofs “visible from public spaces”.
Pioneering surgery in Barcelona as foetus operated on inside mother’s womb
A team of surgeons in Barcelona have successfully operated on a foetus inside his mother’s womb.
During a routine check-up at 20 weeks of pregnancy, doctors discovered that the baby had a severe abdominal malformation called gastroschisis: a large portion of the intestine had developed outside the body .
The procedure was performed during the 28th week of pregnancy, which saw surgeons carefully reposition the 700-gramme fetus’ back in its abdomen using laparoscopy.
Until now, this type of intervention had been performed only sporadically in leading medical centres in the United States and Colombia but never in Europe, making the case treated in Barcelona a medical milestone on the continent.
