Tatiana Maslany sat down with Seth Meyers on his Family Trips podcast this week. She came ready to talk about her childhood in Canada, and she brought plenty of good stories with her.

She grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, and she called it “the middle of nowhere.” There’s obvious warmth behind it. It wasn’t a complaint. Regina isn’t exactly a typical Hollywood origin story. But it gave her plenty to draw from.

The actress is best known for her Emmy-winning role on Orphan Black. The Family Trips conversation, though, wasn’t about any of that. It was about growing up on the Canadian prairies. The memories came out vivid and specific.

There was a lot of outdoor life. Maslany described family outings full of hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. Her family made long road trips to Banff a regular thing. There were moose sightings. And she talked about Regina Beach fish and chips with clear, specific fondness. Some food memories really do follow you everywhere.

Another charming detail surfaced in the episode: the family maintained informal graveyards for departed goldfish. It’s whimsical. And it says a lot about her as a storyteller. She doesn’t smooth-coat her memories.

The multilingual part of her childhood is its own story. Maslany learned German as a baby. She picked up French later and even did French improv as a child. She was growing up in Saskatchewan and navigating multiple languages at the same time. That’s an eclectic combination for a prairie kid. It clearly left a mark.

Not every memory was a comfortable one. She mentioned getting walking pneumonia on a family vacation. That’s a rough way to spend any trip. And then there was the snowboarding accident: she wiped out and sprained both wrists at once. Two at the same time. She tells it with a laugh now. But that’s a pretty brutal souvenir from an afternoon on the slopes.

Meyers built Family Trips as a space for guests to revisit meaningful travel memories and family experiences. Maslany is a natural fit for it. She’s a good storyteller, and she doesn’t smooth out the rough edges.

The conversation also made room for a brief mention of her current work. Maslany is starring in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, a darkly comedic thriller on Apple TV. She’s kept details relatively quiet so far. A mention on a podcast isn’t a deep dive, but it’s a welcome signal for anyone looking forward to the show.

Family Trips is on Spotify, YouTube, and all major podcast platforms.
