Sixteen years after The Social Network redefined how Hollywood tells the story of Silicon Valley, Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for its long-awaited follow-up, officially titled The Social Reckoning.
This time, Aaron Sorkin is not just writing the screenplay, he is stepping into the director’s chair as well, taking over from David Fincher. The film picks up the story nearly two decades after the events of the original, shifting focus away from Facebook’s founding and toward its consequences. Based on Jeff Horwitz’s Wall Street Journal investigation known as The Facebook Files, the story follows Frances Haugen, played by Oscar winner Mikey Madison, a Facebook data scientist who teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, to expose the platform’s most closely guarded secrets, including its knowing role in spreading misinformation and harmful content to millions of users worldwide.
Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Mark Zuckerberg, taking over from Jesse Eisenberg, and brings a quiet, unsettling intensity to the character that already has awards-season conversations starting early. Bill Burr rounds out the principal cast. Sorkin has described the project as a companion piece to the original rather than a direct sequel, a film less about how Facebook was built and more about what it became and what it cost.
The trailer dropped on June 10, 2026, and instantly divided audiences online. Some are calling Strong’s take on Zuckerberg a potential Oscar performance in the making, while others remain skeptical about revisiting one of the most acclaimed standalone films of its era. Either way, The Social Reckoning is clearly positioning itself as one of the most important and talked-about releases of the year.
