Gabriel Diallo of Montreal, Quebec recorded his first win in over two months on Monday, and in the process delivered an upset. Diallo, the 91st ranked player in the world, upset Terence Atmane of France, the 50th ranked player in the world, 6-7, 6-4, 6-5.
The serve was a key statistic win the match. Diallo had 12 aces compared to 11 for Atmane. Diallo broke Atmane three times.
It has been a tough season for Diallo. He was ranked as high as 33rd in the world in August of last year, and now he has seen his ranking drop 58 places. Diallo’s last win came on April 13 when he beat Vitaliy Sachko of Ukraine, 6-1, 6-2. Since then, Diallo has lost five straight matches.
The fact that Diallo beat Atmane should give him some confidence. Atmane reached the semifinals of the 2025 Cincinnati Open and the fourth round of the 2026 Miami Open.
Diallo next plays Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina in the second round of Eastbourne on Wednesday. Diallo steamrolled past Etcheverry in the first round of Miami last year, 6-3, 6-0. Diallo had six aces and broke Etcheverry five times. In Eastbourne, Etcheverry is seeded fourth. He is currently ranked 32nd in the world, and won his first ATP event earlier this year in Rio.
