Tammara Thibeault of Saint-Georges, Quebec won a silver medal in a World Boxing Cup event in Guiyang, China on Sunday in the women’s 75 kilogram division. In the final, Thibeault lost to China’s Ziyi Bao. Thibeault won three matches prior to her final bout. She defeated Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom of India 5-0 in the round of 16, Maryelis Yriza of Venezuela 4-1 in the quarterfinals, and Agata Kaczmarska of Poland 5-0 in the semifinals. Kaczmarksa and Aziza Zokirova of Uzbekistan shared the bronze medal.
Canadian boxers have now won four World Cup medals in 2026. Three Canadian men won bronze medals in the World Cup in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil in April. Keoma Al Ahmadieh of Montreal, Quebec won a bronze medal in the men’s 60 kilograms, Gabriel Labrie of Montreal won a bronze medal in the men’s 65 kilograms, and Josh Ofori of Edmonton, Alberta won a bronze medal in the men’s 80 kilograms.
Al Ahmadieh defeated Imad Azoui of Morocco 5-0 in the round of 32, Michele Baldassi of Italy 5-0 in the round of 16, and Shunsuke Kitamoto of Japan 5-0 in the quarterfinals. Al Ahmadieh then lost 5-0 to Salim Ellis-Bey of the United States in the semifinals. Lounes Hamraoui of France won the other bronze medal. Luis Gabriel of Brazil won the gold medal and Ellis-Bey won the silver medal.
Labrie defeated Shpetim Bajoku Bajoku of Kosovo 5-0 in the round of 32, Jacob Cassar of Australia 5-0 in the round of 16, and Connor Campbell of New Zealand 3-2 in the quarterfinals, before losing 5-0 to Yuri Falcao of Brazil in the semifinals. Alexandru Paraschiv of Macedonia won the other bronze medal. Falcao won the gold medal and Shion Nishiyama of Brazil won the silver medal.
Ofori defeated Pablo Coy Bernal of Spain in the round of 32 via abandonment. He then defeated William Cholov of Bulgaria in the round of 16 as the referee stopped the decision, and then beat Noel Pacheco Noel of the Dominican Republic 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Ofori then lost 3-2 to Gabrijel Veocic of Croatia in the semifinals. Wanderley Pereira of Brazil won the gold medal and Veocic won the silver medal. Dias Molzhigitov of Kazakhstan won the other bronze medal. The medals for Thibeault, Al Ahmadieh, Labrie and Ofori will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
