Serena Williams injured her right knee in Tuesday’s Wimbledon singles comeback and is questionable for her doubles match Thursday with sister Venus Williams.
Maya Joint, 20, defeated 44-year-old Serena Williams 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the first round. It was the first singles match for Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, since the 2022 U.S. Open.
Her agent, Jill Smoller, released a statement on Wednesday confirming that Williams “tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set.”
“She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week,” Smoller said.
The Williams sisters — who won six Wimbledon doubles titles together, the last in 2016 — are scheduled to play their first-round match against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra on Thursday at the All England Club.
According to ESPN, only Venus Williams was listed on the practice schedule on Wednesday.
Serena Williams played in two doubles tournaments last month ahead of the grass-court Grand Slam, partnering with Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova.
