LeBron James doesn’t skip a chance to hype his friends. The four-time NBA champion posted on Instagram this week, tagging comedian and actor Kevin Hart and calling him out for a round of golf with his new clubs.
The message was warm and direct. In the caption, James wrote, “Always gotta look out for your friends man! @kevinhart4real love you man! See you on the course with your new set of clubs! Lets go!” A string of laughing and golfer emojis rounded it out.
There was nothing strategic about it. LeBron was being publicly affectionate toward a close friend. The casual energy made it feel genuine, not manufactured.
James and Hart have been close for years. Their friendship goes back over a decade and has played out in public plenty of times – Hart has shown up courtside at Lakers games, and the two have been photographed together at events and vacations. It’s a cross-industry bond that holds up in both worlds. Golf is the latest thing they share.
Hart has talked openly about how seriously he takes the sport. He’s been spotted at courses across the country and has called it a genuine passion in interviews. LeBron has been building his own presence in the golf world alongside his basketball career and made no secret of the interest. They’re two guys with a shared love of the game and the means to play regularly. The math isn’t complicated.
Golf has become a familiar common ground for athletes and entertainers looking to decompress and stay competitive without making it a big production. For James and Hart, it’s clearly become a comfortable shared habit.
The Instagram post pulled in over 621,000 likes. For an unprompted, no-occasion shoutout between two friends, that’s a solid number. It also reflects the combined reach these two carry. LeBron has one of the biggest followings in sports, and Hart’s audience crosses entertainment, comedy, and business.
The reaction in the comments was predictably enthusiastic. This wasn’t a moment that needed controversy to carry attention. The warmth did that on its own.
Hart’s new clubs weren’t named or described in the post. The gear was the excuse. The subject was the friendship.
Today also happens to be Kevin Hart‘s 47th birthday. Getting a public Instagram call-out from LeBron James counts as a decent birthday present.
Off the court, LeBron has been deliberate about his public identity for a long time. He talks about loyalty and shows up for his people publicly and often. A moment like this fits cleanly into that.
Hart has spent the better part of two decades building one of the more durable brands in entertainment. His stand-up work keeps him in rotation, his film credits are extensive, and he stays visible across business and public appearances. He doesn’t need LeBron to maintain relevance. But a warm public call-out from arguably the most famous athlete alive is still a good thing to have on your timeline.
There’s no confirmed tee time from either side. LeBron James told the world he’s heading to the golf course with Kevin Hart. There’s probably some follow-through coming.
