Valerie Bertinelli has been part of a number of shows over the years, but many still have a special place in their heart for Hot in Cleveland. The series saw her team up with a number of other talented actresses, including their very own Golden Girl, Betty White. During a recent conversation, Bertinelli looked back at her time on the show, sharing some kind words for her late co-star.
Valerie Bertinelli & Betty White Starred In Hot In Cleveland From 2010 To 2015
Bertinelli is known for her work in a variety of television shows, including One Day at a Time and Touched By an Angel. Outside of acting, she later became known for her work in various Food Network shows.
From 2010 to 2015, Valerie also starred on the sitcom Hot in Cleveland alongside a few other well-known faces. These included Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves, and Betty White. On the show, Bertinelli, Leeves, and Malick were three friends from Los Angeles who moved to Ohio, leasing a home with a sassy caretaker, played by White.
For White, this was one of many shows that she was famous for starring in , including The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls. In fact, White’s involvement with Hot in Cleveland was seen by many as an homage to The Golden Girls.
Tragically, White passed away on December 31, 2021. She was 99 at the time of her death, just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday.
During a recent conversation with People, Bertinelli looked back on her time on the sitcom, particularly her late co-star. While assuring there has “never been anything but happiness” when thinking about the show, she made clear that White’s loss was still felt.
Bertinelli Also Noted One Blooper That Still Had A Special Place In Her Heart
Bertinelli felt that, in a way, White was still with her in spirit. As she shared, “There’s the bittersweetness of not being able to enjoy this with Betty, but she’s so present all the time. I just feel like somebody that … How do I say that? Well, yeah, big. That someone that has such a huge aura, she’s always around.”
As Bertinelli mused, “Anytime that we could make Betty giggle and anytime that Betty could just go up and giggle [was a great memory.]” She also shared one blooper of White’s that she remembered fondly. As she continued, “I mean, I think it’s a classic by now when you go to YouTube, and you watch ‘Bender Over’ — that was her screen name — and we never got through that scene.”

Overall, Bertinelli could tell at the time that working on the show was a rare opportunity in her life. She mused, “I knew at the time, I said, ‘This will never happen again’ in my head. Every morning when I would wake up, I’m like, ‘I get to go to work, I get to hang with Betty, I get to hang with Jane and Wendy and Suzanne [Martin, creator] and Michael Burger and Todd [Milliner] and all the writers and everybody on the crew we just made lifelong friends with.’”
Bertinelli has also kept the show alive in another way. She and Milliner host a podcast series based around the sitcom, Still Hot in Cleveland.
