Fans of The Princess Diaries will be happy to hear that the Queen of Genovia herself has shared an update on the long-awaited third installment in the franchise.
Anne Hathaway, who had her breakout role playing Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 and 2004 films, gave the status update during a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, explaining that the delay is partially due to her personal life.
“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3. But I can say, I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on, we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” the Oscar-winning actress told Andy Cohen.
The Princess Diaries 3 has long been in the works at Disney. In 2022, Aadrita Mukerji (Scorpion, Supergirl series) was hired to write a script for the new installment. Then in late 2024, it was revealed that Adele Lim (Raya and the Last Dragon) would direct the film, with Flora Greeson (The High Note) taking over the screenplay. Since then, updates on the film’s status have been relatively quiet.
Although details are being kept under wraps, we do know the film is set to be a continuation of the series, which focuses on Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), who finds out her estranged grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), is the Queen of Genovia, and she is the heir to the throne. At the end of the second film, Mia is crowned the Queen of Genovia as a single woman, after Parliament abolishes a law requiring a queen to be married before ascending to the throne. However, she also gets together with Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) at the end.
For now, we’ll wait for any more news on The Princess Diaries 3, including whether Julie Andrews and/or Chris Pine will reprise their roles alongside Anne Hathaway and when production might begin.
In the meantime, you can catch Hathaway as Penelope in Christopher Nolan‘s adaptation of The Odyssey, which was released Friday and is dominating the box office. And next month, Hathaway stars alongside Ewan McGregor in the science-fiction survival film The End of Oak Street, which is scheduled to hit cinemas on August 14th.
