Today Show anchor Craig Melvin just faced a terrifying moment when a crazed fan broke onto the set. He then proceeded to scream racial slurs at Craig, although he was actually looking for Al Roker. This threw everyone into a tailspin, although Craig and Al went back to work as if everything was fine. Now, he is stepping away amid this horrific incident, but when will he be back? Craig Melvin Needs A Minute
It was a terrifying morning on July 16th when an intruder made it past security on the Today Show. He was asking for Al Roker and somehow slipped onto the set, confronted Craig Melvin, and spouted racial slurs. That was when he was arrested at around 919 am and action has since been taken. Given what has been going on with co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, and her abduction, everyone is on high alert. This could have gone far worse, but fortunately, no one was physically harmed. Emotionally is quite different.
Now, Craig is taking some time away from the show, and the timing could not be better. He had announced a break the day prior, as many anchors take a summer vacation. Craig has a wife and two children. However, he now needs to decompress from five months of emotional chaos, starting with Savannah’s mother going missing. It culminated with an intruder, which was the icing on the cake. Craig’s vacation began on July 20th, and it is unclear when he will be back. Taylor Twellman will fill in while he is on hiatus.
Savannah Guthrie is gone filming her new game show, Wordle, so they will both be focusing elsewhere. After the horrific intruder nightmare, Craig Melvin had this to say:
“You may have heard that, unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A. Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly; he was placed under arrest, we are cooperating fully with NYPD as they investigate the matter, and we are just very happy that everyone is safe.”
He also posted on his social media and expressed his gratitude for everyone who checked in on him.
This Never Should Have Happened
Today Show fans feel horrible about what happened to Craig Melvin. They wonder if he will need therapy down the line to deal with the aftermath, as no one should ever experience a hate crime:

- Melvin may need therapy after the unhoused man snuck in and verbally abused him
- I’m glad that the deranged perpetrator was apprehended, and that there were no injuries.
