Two Toronto icons are coming to Disney+ Canada.
Film distributor Neon has confirmed that the cult classic Canadian mockumentary series Nirvanna the Band Show will begin streaming on Disney+ in Canada on August 7. This includes the two seasons of the show that ran on Viceland from 2017 to 2018.
Per Matt and Jay, we will refrain from saying it’s going to be a great show.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, which premiered earlier this year to critical acclaim, began streaming on Crave on July 1 and will remain on the service, per The Globe and Mail‘s Barry Hertz. (This isn’t exactly a surprise, given that the film was co-produced by Bell.)
Still, Disney+ getting the Viceland series is notable news. Because Viceland went bankrupt, the show had been caught up in rights issues, so it’s only been streaming on YouTube as a premium video on demand (PVOD) purchase. Neon, which secured the rights to the Nirvanna the Band film, was ultimately able to bring back the Viceland series. Meanwhile, the original webseries that spawned the Viceland show and film is available online.
For those unfamiliar with this incredible Canadian series, Nirvanna the Band the Show stars Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol as fictionalized versions of themselves who hatch increasingly outlandish schemes to book a musical gig at Toronto’s Rivoli. It features a Borat-style “mockumentary” setup in which Johnson and McCarrol interact with everyday people on the streets of Toronto, and it gained a cult following for its quirky humour and guerrilla filmmaking. The original webseries also led to the fan-favourite “Wii Shop Wednesday” meme.
Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, which is one of 2025’s most acclaimed films, follows Matt and Jay as they accidentally travel back to 2008. Notably, this isn’t the pair’s only film this year, either. On August 7, A24 will release Tony, a biopic about the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain (played by The Holdovers‘ Dominic Sessa) that was directed by Johnson and scored by McCarrol.
It should also be noted that Matt and Jay had shot part of a third season prior to Viceland shuttering. The pair have expressed their desire to finish it one day, with Johnson noting he originally made 2023’s BlackBerry to get the third season made. Hopefully, all of this success helps it all finally come together.
