Every World Cup produces two lists. The players who arrived with the weight of expectation and somehow exceeded it, and the ones who carried the same weight and crumbled.
The 2026 edition, for all its expanded format and logistical complexity, delivered both in abundance.
Spain won the tournament and produced plenty of standout performances, so did Argentina, France and England. Here are five from each side of the line.
Five players who overachieved at the 2026 World Cup
Lionel Messi (Argentina)
He’s 39 and has been doing this since 2006, and somehow, in what is almost certainly his final World Cup, Messi produced the best individual tournament of any player on the planet.
Eight goals, four assists, 12 direct contributions, more than any other player at the tournament. His first World Cup hat-trick, in 31 appearances across six editions.
He broke Miroslav Klose’s all-time scoring record. He scored or assisted in 11 consecutive World Cup matches.
He has 10 knockout stage assists, six more than any other player in the recorded history of the competition.
Against England in the semi-final, with five minutes left and Argentina losing, he created two goals in the space of ten stoppage-time minutes.
At 39 years old, the age when most footballers are two or three years into retirement, Messi produced the most extraordinary individual World Cup performance since his own previous efforts.
Jude Bellingham (England)
Going into this tournament, there were questions about Bellingham. His club season at Real Madrid had been difficult, derailed by the chaos of Raul Arbeloa’s caretaker tenure and a lack of consistency that saw him in and out of the team at points during the campaign.
The World Cup offered a reset, and what followed was the most prolific individual tournament any midfielder has ever produced for the Three Lions.
Six goals across six matches, a seventh in the third-place match against France, four Man of the Match awards and a place in the record books as the highest-scoring midfielder in the history of the competition.
Erling Haaland (Norway)
This was Haaland’s first major international tournament, and he scored seven goals. A goal every 51 minutes. The best debut World Cup return since Grzegorz Lato’s seven for Poland in 1974.
He scored twice in the dying minutes to eliminate five-time champions Brazil in the last-16, the highlight of his summer.
His conversion rate of 39% from 18 shots was the best at a World Cup since Gary Lineker in 1986. Norway’s run ended in the quarter-finals, beaten 2-1 by England after extra time, but Haaland left North America with more World Cup goals from fewer matches than Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney or Zidane managed in their entire careers at the tournament.
Vozinha (Cape Verde)
The name means “Little Granny.” He did not turn professional until he was 25. He has played in Angola, Moldova, Portugal, Cyprus and Slovakia.
He was 40 years old when he ran out at MetLife Stadium for Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup match against Spain and held the reigning European champions to a 0-0 draw with seven saves.
Over the course of the tournament, Vozinha made 18 saves, third most of any goalkeeper in the competition, and Cape Verde did not lose a single match in normal time.
They drew with Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia before losing to Argentina 3-2 in extra time in the Round of 32, a match in which he made eight saves, including a miraculous stop on a Messi free kick in the 73rd minute.
By the time Cape Verde were eliminated, Vozinha had more Instagram followers than Manuel Neuer. Only Peter Shilton in 1990 and Dino Zoff in 1982 have made more World Cup saves at the age of 40 or above.
Rodri (Spain)
In September 2024, Rodri tore his ACL in a Manchester City match against Arsenal. He did not play competitive football again until February 2026.
He missed most of City’s season, watched them collapse domestically without him and arrived at the World Cup off the back of what was, by his standards, a limited competitive preparation.
What followed was the tournament of a man who had spent that time on the treatment table thinking about exactly how he would perform when the opportunity came.
He ranked first in Spain’s FIFA Power Rankings for the entire competition. His passing accuracy did not drop below 93% across seven matches.
He covered the ground that De la Fuente’s pressing system demanded, managed the tempo of every game Spain played and was, against Argentina in the final, the single reason that Scaloni’s side never found the rhythm they needed to threaten Unai Simon.
From ACL surgery to a World Cup winners’ medal in 18 months, he remains the game’s best defensive midfielder.
Five players who underachieved at the 2026 World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
He achieved his record. He became the first man to score in six World Cups and reached 27 appearances, second only to Messi in the all-time list.
Beyond those milestone numbers, however, Ronaldo’s tournament was a damning indictment of what he has become at international level.
He is the only forward to play 500 or more minutes across the 2022 and 2026 World Cups combined without completing a single successful dribble past an opponent.
Against DR Congo in the group stage opener, he had 16 touches and sent 17 of his 22 attempted passes backwards.
Against Spain in the last-16, when Portugal needed their most famous player to produce something, he was peripheral from start to finish as Mikel Merino’s 91st-minute winner ended their campaign.
Ronaldo finished with three goals across the tournament, two against Uzbekistan, one penalty, and Portugal, with Rafael Leao, Joao Felix and Pedro Neto available on the bench, went out having never fully unleashed the attacking quality that could have taken them further.
Bruno Fernandes (Portugal)
At club level, Bruno Fernandes had just broken the all-time Premier League assists record with Manchester United, providing 21 in a single season.
At the World Cup, the man who had been threading through balls and unlocking defences for the best part of nine months arrived on the international stage and produced almost nothing.
Portugal’s creative load fell almost entirely on younger shoulders, Joao Neves, in particular, was the most dynamic presence in the middle, while Fernandes struggled to impose himself on matches in the way his club form had suggested he would.
His no-show against Spain, where Portugal needed someone to create something and found the captain unable to provide it, was the defining image of his tournament.
Yan Diomande (Ivory Coast)
Before the tournament, the conversation around Yan Diomande centred on whether this was a breakout moment or simply the next step for a player who had already announced himself.
Twelve goals and eight assists for RB Leipzig in his debut Bundesliga season at 19 years old had placed him among the most watched young attackers in European football, with Liverpool, PSG and several other elite clubs monitoring his progress.
What the World Cup produced was a reminder of why senior international football at a major tournament is a different test entirely.
Diomande finished with one assist and zero goals across four matches, never able to impose his pace, directness and finishing quality at the level he had managed all season in the Bundesliga.
Ivory Coast beat Ecuador and Curacao in the group stage but were beaten by Germany and then knocked out by Norway in the Round of 32.
Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium)
Belgium’s golden generation has been trying to win a major tournament for a decade. At 35, De Bruyne arrived in North America for a final shot at adding an international trophy to an extraordinary club career.
The tournament he produced was difficult to reconcile with either the reputation or the Napoli form that had earned him his place in the squad.
Belgium drew with Croatia, Egypt and Iran across a stuttering group stage, with De Bruyne admitting to “silly mistakes” and suggesting his side had “put a lot of pressure on themselves.”
The most damning moment came in the last-16 against the United States, Belgium’s biggest match of the tournament.
Rudi Garcia dropped him entirely from the starting lineup. Belgium won 4-1 without him. He returned as captain for the quarter-final against Spain, but by then the momentum was gone, and Belgium lost 2-1.
Joshua Kimmich (Germany)
Germany came to North America with genuine optimism. Nagelsmann had rebuilt the squad, Wirtz and Musiala offered the creative quality that had been missing for years, and a 7-1 opening demolition of Curacao briefly suggested the drought of major tournament success was about to end. It did not.
Germany failed to produce their best football against any opponent, and when Paraguay held them 1-1 in the Round of 32 before winning on penalties, it was a third consecutive World Cup elimination before the quarter-finals.
Kimmich, as captain, delivered the most honest post-match assessment of anyone at the tournament. “We didn’t play well against any opponent. Three times we had major problems against teams that aren’t world-class. That’s a fact. We deserved to be eliminated.”
He will be 35 at the 2030 World Cup, and the window he wanted to use to win something for Germany has now closed.
