India T20I vice-captain Tilak Varma has addressed the growing debate surrounding his strike rate, insisting that his approach is driven by match situations rather than individual statistics. The left-hander, who has come under scrutiny after a dip in scoring speed during recent tours of Ireland and England, said his role within the team often requires him to stabilize the innings before shifting gears. As India prepare to face Zimbabwe in a five-match T20I series beginning on July 23 in Harare, Tilak believes his performances should be judged in the context of the game rather than by strike-rate figures alone.

Strike-rate debate gathers momentum after recent series

Tilak has faced increasing criticism over the past few months as his T20I strike rate dropped significantly compared to his outstanding numbers in 2024. After finishing last year with an explosive strike rate of 187.73, the stylish left-hander has seen that figure fall to around 143.12 this year.

The numbers reveal a clear contrast in his performances against different types of bowling. While he has continued to dominate fast bowlers with an impressive strike rate of 172 in 2026, his returns against spin have been a major talking point. Against slower bowlers, Tilak has managed a strike rate of just 103.20, leading to questions about his ability to maintain momentum during the middle overs.

His innings on the tours of Ireland and England further fueled the debate. A cautious 55 off 46 deliveries against Ireland and a slow 3 off 11 balls against England drew criticism from fans and experts, with many suggesting that his batting tempo resembled that of a longer format rather than the demands of T20 cricket.

The scrutiny has also intensified because of his leadership role. Since being named India’s T20I vice-captain, Tilak has alternated between batting at No. 3 and finishing games lower down the order. His strike rate has often been compared with more aggressive domestic performers, including Rajat Patidar, who is yet to make his T20I debut.

Tilak Varma explains the reasoning behind his approach

Responding to the criticism ahead of the Zimbabwe series, Tilak made it clear that he adjusts his batting according to the situation instead of chasing quick runs from the outset.

“I can hit from ball one, but I play according to the situation. From Ireland to England, we were losing four or five wickets inside the powerplay… Going in and trying to accelerate immediately in that situation doesn’t make sense. As vice-captain, the management gives me certain responsibilities, and I want to fulfill those,” Tilak said on JioHotstar.

His comments underline the confidence the Indian team management has placed in him. Rather than viewing himself solely as an attacking batter, Tilak believes his responsibility is to ensure the team recovers from difficult situations before launching an assault later in the innings.

Zimbabwe series offers chance to silence critics

Although Tilak’s conservative innings have drawn criticism, he also produced evidence of his attacking ability in the final T20I against England at Southampton. In that match, he smashed 53 runs from just 25 balls at a remarkable strike rate of 212.00, reminding everyone of the explosive batting that established him as one of India’s brightest young stars.

With the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe set to begin on July 23 in Harare, Tilak will have another opportunity to answer his critics on the field. Consistent performances, particularly against spin, could help shift the conversation back to his match-winning potential and reinforce the value of the flexible role he has embraced in India’s T20 setup.
