For those looking to experience the wonder of nature in the United States, Colorado’s Grand Canyon has long held a top spot on many itineraries. That’s not for nothing: it’s one of the planet’s most impressive natural wonders, of which I am personally enamored, with its length of 277 miles and rocks as old as two billion years.
After having visited the natural area five times, and traveled many miles to experience its viewpoints, treks and panoramic highways, I offer this definitive guide to the Grand Canyon, with everything you need to organize a visit without missing a thing.
The Grand Canyon can be divided into three main areas:
– South Rim: the most frequently visited and most accessible
– North Rim: the wildest, least visited
– West Rim: managed by the Hualapai tribe, and best-known for its Skywalk
It’s standard practice to visit a single zone, typically the South Rim — though if you’re staying in Las Vegas, one might be better served by a trip to the West Rim. Keep in mind that, though the North Rim and the South Rim look close together on a map, you can’t cross directly from one to the other, and instead have to circle the entire canyon by car to make the switch.
South Rim: the can’t-miss area
If it’s your first time, the Grand Canyon’s South Rim is the most recommendable option. It has the highest concentration of viewpoints, services, lodging and marked trails.
Entrance is included in the national parks annual pass. But keep in mind that prices have gone up: in 2026, it is $80 for U.S. residents, and $250 for international visitors. For a single visit to the Grand Canyon, you’ll be paying $35 for a private vehicle, with an $100 additional fee for international visitors. If you plan on visiting multiple parks this year, go for the annual pass.
How to travel the South Rim
One of the keys to fully enjoying the area is getting to know its free shuttle bus system, which functions via several lines:
– Red line (Hermits Rest Route): this line travels between some of the best western viewpoints that are only accessible via bus from March to November.
– Orange line (Kaibab Route): it connects Yaki Point, Mather Point and the Geology Museum.
– Blue line: it connects the commercial area and lodging options.
– Purple line: it connects Tusayan with the park during the high season.
Our advice: park your car and ride the buses to avoid stress and parking issues.
Impressive views on the South Rim
The sites that — in our experience — you shouldn’t skip are Mather Point, Yavapai Point and the Geology Museum, Yaki Point, Hopi Point, Mohave Point, plus Desert View and its tower.
North Rim: the chillest side
The Grand Canyon’s North Rim receives around 10% of visitors. It’s located at a higher altitude (more than 7,800 feet up), which means that it is closed from December to mid-May due to snow.
It has fewer services and viewpoints, but provides a wilder, more calm environment. If you’re looking for fewer people and a more natural experience, it could be an interesting option.
West Rim and the famous Skywalk
The Grand Canyon’s West Rim is managed by the Hualapai tribe and is not included in the annual park pass.
Its biggest attraction is the Skywalk, a glass, horseshoe-shaped platform suspended over the void at an altitude of more than 3,900 feet. Keep in mind that this is the region’s most commercial area, and prices rise even further when you add extras like photos and activities.
If you’re coming from Las Vegas, this is your closest option, and you can catch a tour available in different languages from the city itself if you don’t want to go in your own car. I have opted for just such a tour and honestly, it was great.
Best trekking
If you want to experience the Canyon from within, and not just from above, trails are key. I did two treks with friends and it was an astounding time.
– Bright Angel Trail: A demanding path that descends to the Colorado River. It is divided into phases and has both shaded areas and water fountains. If you don’t want to do the whole thing, at least walk its first half-mile.
– South Kaibab Trail: More direct, and with less shade. It offers spectacular views throughout. No water fountains, so make sure you plan ahead when it comes to hydration.
The park does not recommend descending to the river and coming back up on the same day if you’re not well-prepared physically. That being said, my friends and I started on the South Kaibab Trail and combined it with the Bright Angel, and it was an incredible experience. It’s important to bring water, although there are places on the Bright Angel to refill.
Fly over in a helicopter or plane
One starred experience is a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. Leaving from Tusayan, 25-to-30-minute flights start at $250. There are also options that leave from Las Vegas and can be bought in a package with other activities. If you have a tight budget, the short flight is enough to comprehend the magnitude of the Canyon from the air. Book in advance, especially during the high season.
Where to sleep at the Grand Canyon
Inside the park, primarily on the South Rim, there are several historic lodging options, like El Tovar Hotel, Bright Angel Lodge and Maswik Lodge. Rooms get booked months in advance. There are also campsites like Mather Campground, which was where I slept one of the times I passed through on a trip across the United States in a schoolbus.
Outside the park is Tusayan — located 15 minutes from its entrance — which is highly recommended. Then there’s the most economic option, Williams, located at an hour by car (not bad if it’s on the way).
Practical tips to organize your trip
– Plan to spend at least half a day: ideally, an entire day.
– Arrive early to avoid the crowds.
– Always bring water, even if you’re only going to the viewpoints.
– Check the weather: the temperature can vary dramatically between the edge of the park and its interior.
– Buy the annual pass if you’re going to be visiting other national parks.
Is it worth it?
Most definitely. No matter how many photos or videos you’ve seen, when you come face-to-face with the Canyon’s abyss, the sensation is hard to describe. It’s not just any landscape — it’s on a scale that is hard to fathom.
