Bangladesh produced a stunning performance to defeat Australia by nine wickets in the first Test at Marrara Oval, Darwin. The visitors dominated large parts of the contest with both bat and ball, putting the world’s No. 1 Test side under sustained pressure across four days.

After bowling Australia out for 198 in the first innings, Bangladesh responded with 426 to establish a commanding 228-run lead. Australia fought back through Cameron Green’s century in their second innings, but Bangladesh’s bowlers eventually dismissed the hosts for 284, leaving only 57 runs to chase. The visitors completed the formalities comfortably on the fourth afternoon.

Hasan Mahmud’s six-wicket haul puts Australia under pressure

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first, but Bangladesh’s bowlers quickly made their presence felt. Hasan Mahmud delivered a career-best spell, claiming six wickets for 55 runs to dismantle the Australian batting lineup. Steven Smith offered the strongest resistance with a determined 71, but Australia struggled to build meaningful partnerships around him. Ebadot Hossain also made an important contribution with two wickets for 39 runs as the hosts were bowled out for just 198.

Bangladesh’s response was completely different. Tanzid Hasan produced a magnificent innings of 101, registering his maiden Test century in only his second match. The opener provided the foundation for a huge total, while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto added a valuable 84. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then played an important lower-order role with 65. Despite Josh Hazlewood claiming six wickets for 89 runs, Bangladesh continued to accumulate runs and eventually reached 426. The 228-run first-innings lead put Australia in a difficult position and gave Bangladesh a significant advantage heading into the second innings.

Cameron Green’s century delays Bangladesh’s victory

Australia needed a strong batting display in their second innings to stay alive in the contest. Green stepped up with a superb 104, becoming the main source of resistance for the hosts. Green received some support from Smith, who scored 44, but Australia’s batting lineup once again struggled against Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack. Mehidy was particularly effective, constantly creating pressure with his accuracy and variations.

The off-spinner removed Smith, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon to complete a five-wicket haul. Taskin Ahmed also contributed by dismissing Mitchell Starc, while Hasan eventually removed Green after the all-rounder had taken Australia past the 100-run mark. Green’s century ensured Australia avoided another low total, but once he departed, the innings quickly lost momentum. Mehidy finished with 5/56 as Australia were bowled out for 284, leaving Bangladesh with only 57 runs required for victory.

    Bangladesh complete historic nine-wicket victory

Bangladesh made light work of the modest target on the fourth afternoon. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam scored an unbeaten 25 as the visitors completed the chase with nine wickets in hand. The victory marked Bangladesh’s first Test win in Australia, making it one of the most significant results in the country’s Test history. It was only their third Test match on Australian soil and their first Test in the country in 23 years.

Hasan was the standout performer with nine wickets in the match, including his career-best 6/55 in Australia’s first innings. Mehidy also made a major impact with both bat and ball, scoring 65 before claiming five wickets in the second innings. Tanzid Hasan’s century proved equally important, giving Bangladesh the platform to establish their massive first-innings advantage. Instead, they produced a complete performance to dismantle Australia and secure a memorable nine-wicket victory in Darwin.

Bangladesh have pulled off the unthinkable! They have humbled the No. 1 Test playing nation in their own backyard 🔥🌟#AUSvBAN #BangladeshCricket pic.twitter.com/kQ3QFwmMVJ
