Bangladesh will enter the second Test against Australia with history within touching distance after securing a stunning maiden Test win on Australian soil in Darwin. The visitors produced a complete team performance, with Tanzid Hasan‘s composed 101, Hasan Mahmud‘s impressive match haul of 9/111 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz‘s five-wicket burst in the second innings helping them dismantle Australia’s batting order. With a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, Bangladesh only need to avoid defeat in Mackay to secure a historic series triumph.

Australia, meanwhile, have little room for error. The hosts must win the second Test to level the series and avoid a disappointing home defeat. Cameron Green‘s century and Steve Smith‘s determined 71 were among the few bright spots in Darwin, but Australia’s top order struggled against Bangladesh’s disciplined seam bowling. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, who finished the first Test with 6/89, will be expected to spearhead Australia’s response with the ball.

    Bangladesh eye historic series win

The first Test demonstrated Bangladesh’s ability to make the most of crucial moments. Their bowlers consistently troubled Australia’s batters, while the middle and lower order contributed enough runs to put the hosts under sustained pressure. Tanzid’s maiden Test century was particularly important, giving Bangladesh a strong platform with the bat. Mehidy then delivered with the ball when his side needed him most, ensuring Australia could not recover during the final stages of the match. Now, with a series victory potentially just a draw away, Bangladesh will be confident heading into Mackay.

Australia need a much-improved batting display

For Australia, the second Test represents an opportunity to erase the disappointment of Darwin. Green’s century showcased his ability to absorb pressure, while Smith once again provided valuable resistance, but the overall batting effort lacked consistency. The Australian top order will need to find answers against Bangladesh’s seamers, particularly if the visitors can generate movement with the new ball. Cummins and Hazlewood will also have a major role to play as Australia look to force a series-deciding result.

Mackay Weather Forecast for the 2nd Test

Mackay is expected to offer a mix of sunshine, humidity and a few interruptions from rain during the second Test between Australia and Bangladesh. While the opening day should remain largely dry and sunny, the second and third days could see morning showers and drizzle. Conditions are expected to settle again towards the final two days, with plenty of sunshine and minimal chances of rain.

    • Day 1: Mostly sunny and pleasant conditions are expected in Mackay, with plenty of sunshine throughout the day. The temperature could reach 24°C, while the probability of precipitation is just 1%.
    • Day 2: The weather could be more unsettled, with occasional rain and drizzle during the morning. Conditions should improve later as clouds gradually give way to some sunshine. The temperature is expected to reach 25°C, with a 60% chance of precipitation.
    • Day 3: A morning shower could affect parts of Mackay before conditions become partly sunny later in the day. Temperatures are likely to peak at around 23°C, with a 55% probability of precipitation.
    • Day 4: Mostly sunny and humid conditions are forecast, offering a largely dry day for cricket. The temperature could climb to 26°C, with only a 1% chance of precipitation.
    • Day 5: The final day is expected to bring decreasing cloud cover and humid conditions. Temperatures should reach around 25°C, while the probability of precipitation remains very low at 1%.

Great Barrier Reef Arena Pitch Report

Great Barrier Reef Arena is set to host its first men’s Test, with the surface expected to offer useful assistance to fast bowlers early in the game. The pitch should provide reasonable pace, carry and bounce during the opening couple of days, making the new-ball spell particularly important. As the match progresses, batting conditions are expected to become more favourable, especially around Days 2 and 3. However, the surface could gradually dry out later in the Test, potentially bringing reverse swing and increased assistance for spinners.

Nathan Lyon could become a key factor for Australia as the pitch deteriorates, while Miraz is likely to pose a similar threat for Bangladesh. Given the anticipated early batting-friendly conditions, the captain winning the toss could be tempted to bat first and make the most of the truer surface before it begins to offer greater assistance to bowlers.
