State Farm’s $5 billion dividend is largest payout in company history

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company has begun distributing $5 billion in cash dividends to auto policyholders, the largest payout in the insurer’s more than 100-year history, according to Yahoo Finance.

The payments, which began going out in waves this summer, cover more than 49 million vehicles insured under qualifying State Farm auto policies held in 2025. Customers eligible for at least $10 do not need to currently hold a State Farm policy to receive a check, and some may receive more than one payment if they insured multiple vehicles.

Individual dividend amounts will vary by state and by the premium a policyholder paid last year, ranging between 4% and 10% of that premium per vehicle. State Farm says the payments average roughly $100 per vehicle.

State Farm confirmed in a news release that millions of customers have already received their dividends, with more payments to follow over the coming months as the distribution rolls out nationwide by location. Customers with an email address on file will be notified electronically and directed to an online portal to choose between an electronic payment or a mailed check; those without a current email on file will automatically receive payment by mail.

Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual’s president and chief executive officer, tied the payout to the company’s financial performance over the past year, saying it translated into “lower auto rates and cash back in the form of a $5 billion policyholder dividend.” Mr. Farney’s comments were included in the company’s news release.

State Farm emphasized that the dividend will not affect future policy rates, which the company says are set based on projected future costs rather than past financial results.

This particular $5 billion dividend applies only to qualifying State Farm Mutual personal-auto customers. Holding another State Farm product, such as a homeowners, renters or life policy, does not independently qualify a customer for this payment. State Farm’s life insurance affiliates separately reported nearly $1 billion in dividends to qualified life policyholders in 2025 — a record for those companies — though that distribution is unrelated to the auto dividend.

Dividends of this kind are possible because State Farm operates as a mutual insurance company, meaning policyholders are considered members and effective shareholders rather than external investors. Unlike publicly traded insurers, mutual companies cannot sell stock to raise capital and instead return profits to members through payments such as this one.

Customers with questions about the status of their payment can call State Farm’s dividend contact center at 888-808-9532 or visit SFDividend.com for state-specific delivery timelines.
