Let’s start today’s column with a quick quiz:

Pop Quiz Question #1: What is currently the top Mexican export to the United States?

If you are like most people, you are thinking of one of three categories: alcoholic beverages (think tequila, mezcal, Corona beer), food (perhaps avocados, jalapenos, tomatoes) or automobiles. All of those answers are incorrect.

Pop Quiz Question #2: Which country sells more AI servers and equipment to the United States, Mexico or Taiwan?

Of course, most people answer Taiwan. That would also be incorrect.

Mexico’s server-related exports to the US have overtaken autos, underscoring how AI data-center demand is reshaping its export base.

Sometimes just one picture, or in this case — one chart recently published by the Financial Times — can be incredibly insightful. Above, you’ll see a chart comparing Mexican exports of two product categories from 2010 to the present day. The blue line shows vehicles, which Mexico has been exporting for over 60 years. Last year, nearly 80% of Mexico’s light vehicle exports went to the United States. The red line shows server-related hardware (think AI data centers). The x-axis shows the years from 2010 to 2026. The y-axis shows monthly exports in billions of US dollars.

As can be clearly seen, exports of server-related hardware have absolutely exploded in the past two years, to the point where they are now surpassing vehicles. Last month alone, over US $15 billion of these products were exported. Think about that for a minute. The news is filled on a daily basis with headlines telling us that Trump has decided not to renew the USMCA or that Trump commented that “we don’t need anything that Mexico has.” Other headlines lead us to believe that tariffs are being slapped on most Mexican goods, significantly hurting Mexico in the process. Neither is true.

That being said, much of the conversation often seems to revolve around two categories of products highly influenced by two distinct voting groups in the U.S. The first is union members and more specifically the members of the United Auto Workers, who have an obvious interest in keeping as much vehicle production as possible in the country. The second is U.S. farmers, who naturally want to keep food production domestic. As a result of these two powerful and influential groups, those segments are what we most often hear about — more specifically cars and tomatoes. And in fact, the U.S. currently has a 17% “antidumping” tariff on Mexican tomatoes and a relatively small and extremely complex-to-calculate tariff on Mexican vehicles. Fun fact: One of the final projects my senior year of college was to analyze the impact of U.S. tomato tariff practices and policies on Mexico. (Yes, I am aware of what an exceptionally boring topic that is for a final project!)

Perhaps not surprisingly, server equipment from Mexico has a 0% tariff from the United States. The most in-demand product on the planet right now has firmly established Mexico in its supply chain, and investment, jobs and exports are all booming in this area. Taiwanese companies are investing heavily in Mexico. It’s all happening very fast. It’s quite exciting and going to be very interesting to continue to follow.

So while most headlines would have you believe that the Mexico-U.S. trade relationship is in shambles, the reality is as follows:

    1. Mexico moves past Taiwan as the top AI server exporter to the U.S.: https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/mexico-moves-past-taiwan-as-top-ai-server-exporter-to-united-states/

    2. Mexico is now by far the leading exporter to the U.S.: https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/mexico-in-numbers-mexico-exports-us-china-canada/

    3. Inflation is now lower in Mexico than in the U.S. for the first time: https://mexiconewsdaily.com/business/inflation-mexico-lower-united-states-why-thats-such-a-big-deal-a-perspective-from-our-ceo/

    4. Mexico’s export revenue is up 25% so far this year: https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/mexico-export-revenue-this-year/

So what’s the bottom line here? Follow the data, not the noise, and stay tuned to what is the most dynamic segment in the world, growing fast and furious right here in Mexico.
