Craig Melvin has been part of all sorts of unusual yet memorable moments on Today. Recently, he ended up giving his co-hosts something of a surprise. Not only did he share a surprising expletive, but he also seemed to mix up the expression.

Craig Melvin Recently Discussed The Premier League During An Episode Of Today

Melvin joined Today in 2018, first starting as a weekday news anchor. He then became a co-host for the show’s third hour.

In early 2025, Melvin took over the primary co-anchor role alongside Savannah Guthrie. At the time, he took over for Hoda Kotb, who stepped away from her official position on the show.

During a recent episode of the morning show, NBC Sports host Rebecca Lowe was reporting live from London. At the time, she talked about the return of the Premier League in the U.K.

This caused Savannah Guthrie to tease that the Today team was keeping “neutral” when it came to teams. However, a crew member was highlighted wearing an Arsenal F.C. T-shirt.

Lowe then asked Melvin, “Craig, are you still a Liverpool fan? ‘Cause Craig told me during the Olympics he was Liverpool. But I don’t know. He’s a bit flaky on that one.” Melvin responded, “That’s because, Rebecca, you told me I had to pick a team, and I said, ‘Which team should I pick?’ And you gave me, like, five choices that I liked. I knew The Beatles, so yes, I’m still Liverpool.”

Savannah Guthrie Joked That Her Co-Host Was The Reason Behind The Show’s ‘Seven-Second Delay’

Melvin then shared that Lowe previously taught him a slew of “British phrases” while they previously worked together covering the Olympics. He shared, “One phrase that she taught me, my favorite that I still use from time to time, she was like, ‘You’ve got to go give ‘em the piss. Give ‘em the piss.’”

As the team broke out into laughter, a surprised Lowe explained, “Oh, no, no, no, Craig. It’s not quite that, Craig. It’s not quite that phraseology, and I think at this time in the morning, I’d rather not.”

Melvin corrected himself, noting that the phrase is to “take the piss,” which means to tease someone. Guthrie then quipped, “You know what, Rebecca? There’s a reason we have a seven-second delay on this show now, and it’s Craig.” Melvin responded, “It’s a British phrase!”

Carson Daly then joined in, sharing, “That doesn’t make it OK. I could say some American phrases, but we can’t say them on the air. Give ‘em the pee pee! Give ‘em the tinkle!” Guthrie chimed in, “What we’re doing right now is taking the tinkle out of Craig.” Daly ended the conversation with another joke: “Thank you, Rebecca. If we’re still on the air, in moments, stick around, everybody.”
