Exciting news for rom-com lovers! A sequel to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is in the works at Paramount, and original star Kate Hudson is attached to produce the film.
The sequel is still in early stages of development, with cast and several key creative roles yet to be selected, according to Variety. However, the intention of the filmmakers and studio is reportedly to have both Hudson and her original co-star, Matthew McConaughey, reprise their roles. A screenwriter is currently being sought, and casting will depend on the take they come up with. Stacey Sher (Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich) is also on board to produce the sequel alongside Hudson through Shiny Penny Productions.
Directed by Donald Petrie (Miss Congeniality, Mystic Pizza), the original 2003 film follows a cat-and-mouse romance between magazine columnist Andie Anderson (Hudson) and advertising executive Benjamin Barry (McConaughey), both of whom have ulterior work-related motives for getting into a relationship. Andie is doing research for an article about modern dating, and after seducing Benjamin, she transforms herself into the girlfriend from hell. Meanwhile, Benjamin has a bet with his boss that he can make any woman fall for him, and he’s determined to make things stick with Andie.
More than 23 years after its release, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is still widely considered a staple of the romantic comedy genre. McConaughey recently acknowledged the film’s enduring cultural appeal and revealed that it earns him more in residuals than any other film in his career. With a wave of Y2K nostalgia washing over Hollywood right now, a follow-up to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days also seemed inevitable. This year alone, we’ve had The Devil Wears Prada 2, Scary Movie, and Toy Story 5—all of which performed well at the box office. We also still have Practical Magic 2 and Focker-In-Law, which are both set to release in UK cinemas over the next few months.
