Every year, millions of fans across Canada set their weekly calendars with the gridiron, tuning in to watch their favourite CFL or NFL teams every single week. However, only a fraction of those same fans ever turn their attention to the place where so many of their favourite local players get developed.
U Sports football is the proving ground for future pros in this country; a grassroots system that punches far above its weight class. From perennial powerhouses to historic basement dwellers, almost every school has at least one athlete on their roster capable of competing with the very best.
With the 2026 season getting underway on Saturday, 3DownNation has embarked on an ambitious project to expose the talent hidden underneath our national noses. Over the next week, we’ll break down the top professional prospect at every program, regardless of their draft year, shining a light on budding second-years and established fourth-years alike.
Today, we begin with the OUA. In recent years, the Ontario conference has played a role in the development of several current NFL players, including Tavius Robinson (Guelph), Isaiah Adams (Laurier), Nikola Kalinic (York), Niklas Hennings (Queen’s), and Devin Veresuk (Windsor), as well as CFL stars like Tre Ford (Waterloo), Tyrell Ford (Waterloo), Kian Schaffer-Baker (Guelph), Kiondre Smith (Guelph), Jackson Findlay (Western), and A.J. Allen (Guelph).
This list was assembled in extensive consultation with U Sports coaches and CFL scouts. It is not intended to reflect the best players on every U Sports team right now, though in some cases it might. All of the selections are based on projections of future success at the next level, which requires specific measurables and attributes to be attainable. It should be considered a reflection of the current moment, with all players able to increase or decrease their stock based on subsequent performances and development.

Carleton University Ravens: QB Elijah Barnes, Class of 2027 (Hamilton, Ont.)
Multiple CFL scouts pointed to Barnes as the most intriguing player on Carleton’s roster, though the jury is still out on whether he will be assessed as a quarterback. He started just three games last year and played the majority of snaps in four, but he still completed 65 percent of his passes last year for 1,634 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions. Listed at six-foot-six and 210 pounds, long levers give the former Team Canada pivot easy arm talent, which was on full display as an invitee to Redblacks training camp. However, his frame, toughness, and elite escapability have some believing he could play receiver at the next level, following the recent models of Manitoba’s Jackson Tachinski and McGill’s Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald.

University of Guelph Gryphons: LB Jevaun Jacobsen, Class of 2027 (Burnaby, B.C.)
Jacobsen may not be a household name for CFL fans yet, but his older brother certainly is: Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Mace. Much like the former NFL defensive lineman, he initially attracted NCAA attention as a two-star recruit and initially committed to Charleston Southern University before his plans were derailed. The six-foot, 215-pound cover linebacker resurfaced with the Gryphons in 2023 and has since proven he can do it all, racking up 35 total tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, and a pass breakup in 10 games last year en route to a second-team OUA all-star selection.

McMaster University Marauders: DL Christian Chukwuali II, Class of 2029 (Hamilton, Ont.)
A lot can happen in three years, but if Chukwuali continues on his current trajectory, then the entire country better watch out. Not only did the six-foot-three, 230-pound edge rusher earn OUA all-rookie team honours in his first season, but he was a second-team all-conference selection as well. His elite get-off and bend left plenty of veteran offensive tackles punching at air, as the young Marauder collected 16 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and five sacks. Assuming he stays healthy, the production should only increase as he physically matures and refines his technical toolbox.

University of Ottawa Gee-Gees: DL Alias Amelin, Class of 2027 (Russell, Ont.)
Production does not always perfectly equate to projection, so while the likes of Louis Prince and Seyi Ayedegbe have amassed more raw stats along the Gee-Gees’ defensive front, Amelin is the player with the best pro traits. The six-foot-three, 255-pound defensive end is still technically raw, with a pass rush plan that sometimes borders on chaotic, but his motor runs hot and the moments where they all come together are special. The transfer from Laval had just 7.5 tackles and two sacks last year, but could be poised for a major step forward after popping off at the East-West Bowl.

Queen’s University Gaels: TE Mateo Tuioti, Class of 2027 (Chilliwack, B.C.)
Standing at six-foot-four and 249 pounds, Tuioti is not your run-of-the-mill blocking H-Back. The big-bodied Samoan is surprisingly quick for his size and was a legitimate receiving threat for the Yates Cup champions last year, catching 24 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games. That earned him second-team All-OUA status, but his best may yet be to come. With so many CFL teams reviving the Canadian tight end role in their offences, it is little wonder why Tuioti was an honourable mention on the first edition of the top 20 scouting bureau rankings.

University of Toronto Varsity Blues: OL Gavin Hemeon, Class of 2027 (Opwaaganisiniing, Ont.)
The U of T provides a world-class education in a myriad of subjects, but they don’t teach size. Fortunately, Hemeon arrived on campus as an expert in that particular topic. Listed at six-foot-seven and 300 pounds, the stalwart right tackle from Northern Ontario carries his weight extremely well across a prototypical frame. With plenty of starting experience, a hardened edge, and underrated movement skills, he’ll be difficult to ignore come draft time.

University of Waterloo Warriors: LB Michael Omoseni, Class of 2027 (Burlington, Ont.)
If you grew a professional linebacker in a lab, the end result might look vaguely akin to Omoseni. A physical specimen at six-foot-three and 251 pounds, he looks equally adept knocking the snot out of running backs between the tackles as he does robbing underneath routes in coverage. That earned him first-team OUA all-star honours last year after he put up 48 tackles, one sack, five pass breakups, and a blocked kick in eight games. At the risk of using recent OUA history as a crutch, there are echoes of Devin Veresuk in his game that CFL teams won’t be able to miss.

Western University Mustangs: OL Sebastian Sibbald, Class of 2027 (Victoria, B.C.)
The Mustangs’ 22-year streak with at least one player selected in the CFL Draft ended in 2026, but the high-quality beef along their offensive line will likely ensure the clock resets under new head coach Michael Faulds. How you stack those big men will depend on preference, but Sibbald has the distinction of being the very largest among them, checking in at six-foot-eight and 330 pounds. That makes him an imposing presence in the run game, helping Ethan Dolby set a new school rushing record last year. While he’s primarily a guard for Western, he has the length and mobility to kick out to tackle if needed.

Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks: REC Ryan Hughes, Class of 2027 (Mississauga, Ont.)
No surprise here, the only U Sports player on the first edition of the 2027 CFL scouting bureau rankings also happens to be the top pro prospect on his team. Hughes is finally ready for his turn in the spotlight after developing in the shadow of Hec Crighton Trophy winner Ethan Jordan, though the six-foot-two, 254-pound speedster has done pretty well as a supporting act as well. He hauled in 59 catches for 769 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games last season, earning second-team All-OUA honours. The worst news that U Sports defensive coordinators heard this offseason was that Hughes failed to secure an NCAA transfer, as no amount of scheming can prevent him from taking off the top.

University of Windsor Lancers: DL Ahmad Taylor, Class of 2027 ( Pontiac, Mich.)
A potent pass rush has been a significant reason why Windsor has been transformed into a reliable contender in Ontario, driven overwhelmingly by talent from across the border. With eight sacks last year, Taylor trailed only his teammate, Braxton Johnson, in the national race, and doesn’t have the size concerns that Johnson may experience. The second-team All-Canadian is a robust six-foot-three and 240 pounds, with the ability to translate speed into power or beat you with quickness off the line.

York University Lions: DL Jaden Dicks, Class of 2027 (Etobicoke, Ont.)
Entering his second season with the Lions but his seventh year overall, Dicks is a product of the modern era of collegiate athletics. He began at Guelph during the cancelled 2020 season, then transferred to the University of Mississippi, where he spent four seasons without playing a single snap. Now 25 years old, the six-foot-five, 251-pound pass rusher is poised to build off a debut campaign in which he collected 18.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.
