Whoopi Goldberg recently made a few headlines with claims about her paycheck on The View. Since then, an insider claimed that the comments might have even raised a few eyebrows at the long-running talk show. In addition, the source weighed in on issues impacting the show for quite some time.
Whoopi Goldberg Has Been Part Of The View Since Season 11
Goldberg is an actress and comedian known for her roles in a variety of films. These include Ghost, The Color Purple, The Lion King, and the Sister Act films.
However, to many, Goldberg is best known for her work as a co-host and moderator on The View. She officially joined the show in 2007 with the premiere of the eleventh season.
As previously reported, Goldberg made headlines during a recent episode of the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast when she shared that she joined the show because she needed the paycheck. At the time, she claimed that her past success as an actress didn’t “always translate” into being able to afford a mortgage. The outlet notably claimed that Goldberg earned around $5 million and $7 million a year.
Since then, insiders claimed that Goldberg’s comments might have struck a nerve with staff behind the scenes of The View. Speaking with Radar Online, an insider shared, “People were rolling their eyes.” They added, “Nobody is saying Whoopi shouldn’t work, but when you’re making millions every year, talking like you’re living paycheck to paycheck comes across as incredibly out of touch.”
The Insider Noted That The View Has Been Dealing With Various Budget Issues
Allegedly, the comments might have caused issues as The View staff have spent years trimming its budget. Disney has put company-wide cost controls in place. Production budgets have been tightened, and staff have been asked to deal with fewer resources.
The source noted, “People have watched colleagues lose jobs, budgets get slashed and departments stretched thin. Meanwhile, Whoopi is still making more than anyone else on the panel by a wide margin. It wasn’t exactly a relatable moment.”

The source further claimed that these comments were not well-received by Goldberg’s co-hosts. They noted, “Most people on the show really do worry about mortgages, tuition and everyday expenses. Whoopi’s version of financial pressure is very different from everyone else’s. There’s a huge gap between protecting a multimillion-dollar lifestyle and wondering if you can pay next month’s bills.”
Ultimately, the insider felt that no one exactly begrudges Goldberg for her success. However, they felt that the timing was off. They noted, “Morale has been tested by years of cutbacks. When the highest-paid person in the building says she’s just hanging on for the paycheck, it doesn’t exactly inspire sympathy.”
