England Women produced a commanding batting performance at Grace Road to chase down Ireland Women’s 281-run target with ease, winning the opening ODI by six wickets. Maia Bouchier led the charge with a superb century, while Sophia Dunkley provided excellent support as the hosts reached 283/4 in just 38.1 overs.

Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter power Ireland to a strong total

England Women won the toss and opted to bowl first, but Ireland Women responded with a strong batting display. The visitors posted 281/5 from their allotted 50 overs, building their innings around several important contributions. Captain Gaby Lewis anchored the innings with a composed 69 from 89 balls, striking eight boundaries. She received excellent support from Amy Hunter, who scored 62 off 90 deliveries with five fours. The pair provided Ireland with a solid platform before the middle order accelerated the scoring rate.

Rebecca Stokell then supplied the attacking impetus with an impressive 54 from 48 balls, including seven fours. Orla Prendergast added 19 from 17 deliveries, while Leah Paul contributed a useful 29 off 39. Alice Tector made 11 before departing early, and Louise Little finished with four. For England, Issy Wong and Charlotte Dean claimed two wickets apiece, while Mady Villiers picked up one. Lauren Filer was particularly economical, conceding just 37 runs from her 10 overs, although Ireland’s steady accumulation helped them finish on a competitive 281.

Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley set up comfortable chase for England

England’s reply was dominated by a brilliant opening partnership between Bouchier and Dunkley. The pair took control of the chase and put Ireland’s bowlers under sustained pressure. Bouchier produced the standout innings of the match, scoring a magnificent 104 from 95 balls. Her knock featured 11 fours and provided the foundation for England’s successful pursuit. Dunkley was equally impressive, striking 73 from just 61 deliveries and finding the boundary 13 times.

The opening pair’s partnership ensured England never appeared to be under significant pressure despite Ireland’s sizeable total. Jodi Grewcock contributed nine before her dismissal, while Alice Capsey added a valuable 41 from 40 balls, including four fours and a six. Freya Kemp then finished the contest in emphatic fashion, smashing 36 from only 22 deliveries with seven boundaries. Danielle Gibson remained unbeaten on one as England completed the chase at 283/4 in 38.1 overs.

Ireland’s bowlers struggled to contain England’s aggressive batting, although Cara Murray emerged as the most successful bowler. She claimed three wickets from nine overs, conceding 58 runs in the process. The two teams will now move to the County Ground in Derby for the next match, scheduled for Thursday, September 3.
