Sri Lanka are all set to host India in a two-match Test series, with the opening game scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium. The series will present a demanding challenge for Shubman Gill and his team, particularly with the conditions in Sri Lanka expected to assist spin. Ahead of the much-anticipated contest, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has weighed in on India’s selection dilemma at the crucial No. 3 position.

AB de Villiers names ideal candidate to bat at No. 3 for India in Galle Test

India have two strong contenders for the No. 3 position, with Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Padikkal in contention for a place in the playing XI. Both batters offer different qualities, making the decision a difficult one for head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian team management. De Villiers believes Sarfaraz is the more attacking option and possesses the ability to change the momentum of a Test match quickly. However, the former South African batter feels Padikkal could be the better choice in Galle, particularly because of his technique and temperament.

“Sarfaraz is a more exciting kind of candidate who can take the game away from the opposition. He hits in funny areas and always keeps the captain on their toes. It is a difficult decision to make,” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

The legendary batter also highlighted the importance of team balance and the left-right combination against spin. According to him, Padikkal’s ability to occupy the crease for long periods could make him a valuable option on turning tracks. De Villiers subsequently made his preference clear, backing Padikkal to take the No. 3 slot.

“I’m leaning towards the guy with a calmer demeanour who can slow the game down and also be attacking if need be. There’s one question around that number three batting spot, with either Sarfaraz or Padikkal having to put their hands up. I’m leaning towards Padikkal. Left-hander, solid technique, and comes across as a guy who can bat for a longer period of time,” De Villiers stated.

Expectations high from Shubman Gill-led India to sizzle in challenging conditions

India will enter the Test series with considerable expectations, but playing in Sri Lanka brings its own set of challenges. The Galle surface can offer assistance to spinners as the match progresses, putting a premium on patience, shot selection and the ability to adapt. For Gill, leading India in testing overseas conditions will provide another opportunity to establish his authority as captain. The top order will be expected to lay a solid foundation, while India’s spin resources could prove decisive as the Test develops.

The No. 3 batter could also play a crucial role in negotiating Sri Lanka’s spin threat. If De Villiers’ prediction comes true, Padikkal will have the responsibility of combining defensive solidity with controlled aggression.
