Atletico Madrid have rejected Real Madrid’s €150m bid for Julian Alvarez, with Los Colchoneros making clear that the Argentine striker is not available at any price short of his €500m release clause. Both clubs issued official statements on Tuesday confirming the offer and its rejection, an unusually public exchange that underscored just how politically charged this particular piece of transfer business has become.

The move represents the latest escalation in a saga that has dominated Spanish football’s summer window. Barcelona had already seen a €100m formal offer rejected on May 29, with Atletico accusing the Blaugrana of running a coordinated media campaign to unsettle the player. Real Madrid’s entry into the race adds a sharper and rather more combustible dimension to a story that showed no signs of cooling.

Real Madrid’s €150m bid officially rejected

Real Madrid confirmed in a board-approved statement that they had submitted a €150m offer to Atletico for Alvarez’s federative rights, describing the relationship between the clubs as positive and noting that Atletico had expressed gratitude before declining. Atletico’s version of events dispensed with the diplomatic framing entirely.

Los Rojiblancos posted a pointed public response making clear they were “neither evaluating nor considering any offers for Julián,” and took the opportunity to address what they described as Real Madrid stealing players from their academy. The statement was widely read in Spain as a deliberate humiliation of Los Blancos, framed with the observation that Real make them laugh “even more than FC Barcelona.” The offer, had it been accepted, would have ranked as the third-largest transfer in football history – context that Atletico appeared entirely unmoved by.

Alvarez, 26, is under contract until 2030. The €500m release clause remains the only legitimate route to signing him, and Atletico have shown no indication they intend to negotiate below it for any domestic rival.

Real Madrid’s bid and the Madrid derby dimension

Florentino Pérez had promised during his presidential re-election campaign – won by a narrower margin than anticipated – that he would submit a €150m galáctico bid on Tuesday. The identity of that target had been the subject of considerable speculation, with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise and PSG’s Vitinha and João Neves all mentioned as possibilities. It turned out to be Alvarez, which confirmed what several Spanish media outlets had suggested and added a pointed inter-city dimension to the saga.

Real pursuing an Atletico player of this profile is not, in itself, unusual – the clubs have negotiated transfers before – but the public confirmation of the bid is highly atypical for Los Blancos, and the political context of Pérez’s campaign promise made it impossible to treat as routine. Atletico’s response, equally public and considerably less gracious, reflects the temperature of a rivalry that has rarely needed encouragement to run hot.

    What next for Julian Alvarez?

Alvarez has reportedly sought an exit from Atletico this summer, and it is understood that in private he has expressed a preference for Barcelona as his destination. However, the 26-year-old has so far been unwilling to make that preference public or agitate formally for a move, which leaves Atletico in a strong negotiating position – able to point to the €500m clause while the player himself declines to force the issue.

Real Madrid’s bid has, if anything, done Atletico a service by resetting Alvarez’s market valuation at a level that makes any below-clause offer look inadequate by definition. Barcelona’s pursuit remains unresolved, and Arsenal, Bayern Munich and PSG are understood to be monitoring the situation. Whether any of those clubs attempt a formal approach – and whether a potential Champions League-club discount on the release clause proves real and executable – will determine whether this saga extends beyond the summer window or closes here.
