Large language artificial intelligence models, such as ChatGPT, often misjudge what people outside the West might value as a moral priority, according to our new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2024, we asked OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, GPT-4 and GPT-4o models to estimate the moral norms—shared ideas about right and wrong—of 48 nations and then compared them with a global sample of over 90,000 human participants. Both humans and AI models were asked to complete a moral foundations questionnaire, in which we measured the extent to which they endorsed six moral values. These foundations were…

OTTAWA — An internal government audit of Canadian diplomatic missions in the U.S. completed late last year found staff faced safety risks and problems with accessing health care — more than a year after a union flagged those same issues. “U.S. cities present security risks related to street crime, protests, the widespread presence of firearms, and broader social crises such as substance abuse and mental health issues,” says the audit completed by Global Affairs Canada. “These factors make security and emergency management a critical component of day-to-day mission operations.” Canadian diplomats are posted to the embassy in Washington, D.C., and…

TORONTO — Ontario’s colleges and universities ministry has disqualified students at five private career colleges from receiving student assistance loans this coming year, after raising concerns with some of the schools’ course enrolment practices. The move comes as career college students across the province are barred from accessing grants through the Ontario Student Assistance Program, part of a financial aid overhaul by the provincial government that also involves sharply reducing the amount of grants students at universities and publicly funded colleges can receive. When Premier Doug Ford’s government made the announcement earlier this year, increasing funding to post-secondary institutions by…

By JOHN SAMARAS Ask what Ozempic costs. The honest answer runs from $25 a month to $1,100 a month, and every number in that range is real, published, and defensible. A phrase that covers a forty-four-fold spread is not a price. It is a fog, and patients make four-figure annual decisions inside it. I run GLP Chart, an independent GLP-1 price index. The index shows that “the price of Ozempic” fails as a concept for three stacked reasons. The molecule sells in five forms under four names. Each form sells through different channels at different prices. And the advertised price…

More details are emerging about the musical performances at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding. Former NFL punter Pat McAfee revealed on his eponymous ESPN talk show on Monday, July 13, that Avril Lavigne was among the stars who took the stage, joining the likes of Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks. According to McAfee, Lavigne, 41, serenaded the happy couple — and their A-list guests — with her 2002 hit song “Sk8r Boi.” “I guess me saying Avril Lavigne played ‘Skr8 Boi’ was the first time that it came out,” he said. “But she was awesome.” He…
