The Netherlands women’s cricket team is set to script a historic chapter in its sporting journey after announcing their squad for the country’s maiden appearance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Wicketkeeper-batter Babette de Leede has been entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the side as the Dutch prepare to compete against some of the strongest teams in world cricket during the tournament in England.

For Babette, the appointment carries emotional value as well as sporting significance. Cricket runs deep in the De Leede family, with her uncle Tim de Leede and cousin Bas de Leede having previously represented the Netherlands men’s team at World Cups. Now, Babette has the opportunity to continue that proud legacy on the women’s stage.

Speaking after the squad announcement, the Dutch skipper expressed excitement about the team’s first-ever appearance at the global event. She highlighted the opportunity to challenge the world’s elite sides and showcase the growing talent pool within Dutch women’s cricket.

Babette also stressed the importance of inspiring the next generation of young girls in the Netherlands. With the tournament taking place in nearby England, she expects strong support from Dutch fans travelling across the border, creating what she described as a memorable experience for players, families, and supporters alike.

Qualification journey reflects rapid rise of Dutch women’s cricket

The Netherlands earned their place at the World Cup after a remarkable campaign during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers held in Nepal earlier this year. Crucial victories in pressure situations helped the side secure a historic qualification berth and underline the steady progress of women’s cricket in the country.

The team management has shown faith in the same core group that achieved qualification success. Before heading into the World Cup, the Dutch side will sharpen its preparations in a T20I tri-series in Scotland, featuring hosts Scotland and Bangladesh. The tournament is expected to provide valuable match practice against quality opposition before the biggest assignment in Dutch women’s cricket history.

    Tough group challenge awaits Netherlands

The Netherlands have been handed a demanding group featuring cricketing heavyweights India, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Despite the difficult draw, the squad will view the tournament as a chance to gain invaluable experience and prove they can compete at the highest level.

Their World Cup journey begins against Bangladesh at Edgbaston on June 14. The Dutch team will then travel across England for their remaining group-stage fixtures, including matches in Leeds against India, Southampton against Australia, and Bristol where they face South Africa and Pakistan.
