The first Test of the Pakistan tour of Bangladesh 2026 is set to begin on May 8 at the iconic Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The opening encounter is not just another bilateral contest, but an important fixture in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle. With valuable points on the line, both teams will be eager to start the series on a winning note and build momentum for the long WTC campaign ahead.

Bangladesh carry confidence from historic 2024 triumph

The hosts will walk into the series carrying immense confidence after their memorable 2-0 sweep over Pakistan in 2024. That historic result marked one of Bangladesh’s finest moments in Test cricket and proved their growing dominance in home conditions. The Tigers outplayed Pakistan in all departments during that series, particularly through disciplined spin bowling and resilient batting performances. That success has also changed the psychological dynamic between the two teams. Bangladesh no longer views Pakistan as overwhelming favorites, especially in subcontinent conditions where their spinners become increasingly dangerous as the match progresses.

Bangladesh have received a major boost with the return of senior pacers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam. Their comeback significantly strengthens the pace attack, particularly with the new ball during the early stages of the innings.

The spin department once again remains Bangladesh’s biggest weapon. The experienced trio of Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Nayeem Hasan is expected to play a central role on the turning Mirpur surface. Taijul’s ability to exploit rough patches, combined with Mehidy’s all-round contributions, gives Bangladesh multiple match-winning options. Nayeem’s consistency at home also adds depth to an already formidable spin unit.

Pakistan begin new era under Shan Masood and Sarfaraz Ahmed

Pakistan enters the series under the leadership of Shan Masood, while former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed begins his tenure as head coach. The team management has shown faith in youth by bringing in promising names like Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal, signaling a gradual transition phase within the squad.

Despite the fresh additions, Pakistan’s fortunes will largely depend on their experienced core. Babar Azam remains the backbone of the batting lineup and will have the responsibility of anchoring the innings against Bangladesh’s quality spin attack. His ability to handle pressure in difficult conditions will be crucial for the visitors.

In the bowling department, Shaheen Afridi’s role becomes extremely important. While Mirpur traditionally assists spinners, Shaheen’s ability to strike with the new ball and reverse swing the old one could provide Pakistan with breakthroughs at key moments. Pakistan will also hope their spinners adapt quickly to the conditions and match Bangladesh’s control in the middle overs.

Weather Forecast for 5 days at Dhaka

    • Day 1 (May 8): The Test begins under sunny skies with a high of 34°C and a low of 26°C. While daytime conditions will remain dry with only a 15% chance of rain, there is a significant 65% chance of precipitation overnight, accompanied by north winds at 4 mph.
    • Day 2 (May 9): Expect another hot and sunny day for the second day of play, with the temperature peaking at 34°C. Humidity levels will be around 53%, and the risk of rain during the day is minimal at 10%, though the sky will turn cloudy in the evening.
    • Day 3 (May 10): Conditions are set to become unsettled on Sunday, with scattered thunderstorms forecast for the daytime and a high 65% chance of rain. Temperatures will dip slightly to 33°C, and the wind will shift to coming from the south at 4 mph.

    • Day 5 (May 12): The final day is expected to see light rain during the day with a 15% chance of precipitation, though the evening should clear up entirely. Temperatures will return to a high of 33°C and a low of 27°C with steady 4 mph winds from the south.
