Barcelona are already in talks with Cesc Fabregas with a view to the former Spain international taking over as head coach in 2028.
Fabregas enjoyed a wonderful playing career after coming through Barca’s La Masia academy with spells at Arsenal, Chelsea, Monaco and Como. He also made nearly 100 appearances for Barcelona between 2011 and 2014 and won 110 caps for his country, helping them win the 2010 World Cup as well as the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
After hanging up his boots in 2023 he remained with Como and coached the club’s youth teams before taking over the role as head coach 12 months later. In his second season in charge, he guided the club to a fourth-placed finish in Serie and a maiden spot in the Champions League.
His achievements in Italy have brought him to the attention of Barca chiefs and, according to Catalunya Radio, he is the leading candidate to take over when Hansi Flick leaves Camp Nou.
Barcelona happy with Flick but Fabregas plan in place
There is no suggestion of an imminent change with Flick recently signing a two-year contract extension with the option for a third but the German has always made it clear he won’t remain in the hotseat for an extended period.
Reflecting on Pep Guardiola’s 10-year tenure at Manchester City, Flick said: “Being at the same club for 10 years at this level… It’s incredible. I don’t think you’re going to see me here for a decade.”
Catalunya Radio claim discussions between Fabregas, Barca president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco have already taken place and the club’s succession plan is set.
Fabregas’ current deal at Como also ends in 2028, although they will undoubtedly try to extend the 39-year-old’s stay in northern Italy given the club’s current trajectory.
Luis Enrique another candidate for Barcelona
Barca are also keeping close tabs on former boss Luis Enrique, who has just won his second Champions League crown with Paris Saint-Germain, although it is claimed his way of working would make his re-integration at the club difficult.
Luis Enrique, who also played for the Blaugrana in an eight-year spell, managed Barca between 2014 and 2017, helping them to two La Liga titles and the 2015 Champions League crown.
