Bari Weiss has brought many changes to CBS News, especially 60 Minutes, since becoming the network’s editor-in-chief. Nearly a year later, sources have often discussed what is happening at the network behind the scenes. Recently, insiders have weighed in on what’s going on as the show is set to debut a new season. In particular, much was made of the resources Weiss was given to promote the show less than a month before this next season drops. It was also noted what this season could mean for Weiss.
Bari Weiss Joined CBS News After Her Media Outlet, The Free Press, Was Acquired Late Last Year
Weiss had been installed as editor-in-chief at CBS News back in October. At the time, Paramount Skydance had purchased Weiss’ independent media outlet, The Free Press, with Weiss not having prior television experience.
Since then, viewers have seen a number of changes take place at the network. In particular, various figures have since left 60 Minutes, both by choice and by termination of their contract, including Anderson Cooper, Scott Pelley, Sharyn Alfonsi, Tanya Simon, and Cecilia Vega.
According to Puck News‘ Dylan Byers, the show’s 59th season is getting an aggressive marketing push. Byers noted, “Sources familiar with the plans say that CBS will blanket the airwaves and major markets with a multipronged, cross-platform campaign to emphasize the show’s new look and feel and commitment to its 60-year legacy.”
The insiders were unsure of exact numbers, saying, “Sources couldn’t put a precise figure on the marketing budget.” However, it was noted, “One said Bari had effectively been given ‘a blank check.’”
The Upcoming Season Of 60 Minutes Was Described As A ‘Litmus Test’ For Weiss
This new marketing blitz comes out less than a month before the new season premieres. As the outlet noted, this underscores the “considerable expectations for the show amid the scrutiny over [Weiss’] leadership of the network.” The season could prove to be an important one for Weiss. It was described as something of a “litmus test” for Weiss’ stewardship of the network.
Season 59 of 60 Minutes is set to debut on September 13, 2026. This new season will already reflect some of the changes that the program has undergone. Nick Bilton previously took over as executive producer, taking over for Tanya Simon.

As previously reported, some returning veterans include Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim, who will remain with the program. Norah O’Donnell was also recently promoted to a full program correspondent. Other contributors and correspondents joining the program include Ross Douthat, Sebastian Junger, and Ariel Levy.
