Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a trailer for Amarga Navidad/Bitter Christmas, filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming Spanish drama starring Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, and Quim Gutiérrez, scheduled for a 2026 Cannes Film Festival debut.
Coming in as a feature on meta-fiction and a creative loophole, Almodóvar’s Amarga Navidad/Bitter Christmas will place audiences between two different stories from two different decades, which find themselves tethered through artistry and expression. The first narrative takes place in 2004 and centres on an advertising director called Elsa as she takes on a long weekend during the festive period, while the latter jumps to 2026 and showcases a filmmaker called Raúl as he works on a script which starts to mirror Elsa’s life and companions.
Cherished as one of Spain’s film auteurs, Almodóvar’s additional filmmaking credits include his 1980 debut Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap/Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón, 1988’s Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown/ Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, 1997’s Live Flesh/Carne trémula and 2024’s The Room Next Door/La habitación de al lado. However, the filmmaker has set a new artistic, emotional standard for this next release, having cited it as “where [he’s] been cruellest with myself” during a talk with the LA Times.
Amarga Navidad/Bitter Christmas is Almodóvar’s seventh Cannes appearance, following All About My Mother/Todo sobre mi madre, Volver, Broken Embraces/Los abrazos rotos, The Skin I Live In/La piel que habito, Julieta, Pain and Glory/Dolor y gloria, and Strange Way of Life/Extraña forma de vida.
Sony Pictures has yet to confirm a release date for Amarga Navidad/Bitter Christmas.
The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is underway and concludes on 23rd May.
