The Braves brought catcher Sandy León back on a minor league contract, according to the MLB.com transaction log. He’ll report to Triple-A Gwinnett.
León elected free agency after being designated for assignment last week. The Braves pushed him off the roster with the Joey Bart acquisition. León has gone 4-44 with 18 strikeouts and no walks at the major league level this season. The complete dearth of offense made backup catcher an area for the Braves to upgrade pending Sean Murphy’s return from a broken finger.
The 37-year-old León isn’t going to provide anything with the bat, but he has clearly made a strong impression on the organization for his leadership and work behind the dish. León had a five-game cameo with the Braves last year and has spent most of the past three seasons in Gwinnett.
Drake Baldwin and Bart are on the MLB roster, while Jair Camargo holds a 40-man roster spot. León joins Camargo and the still injured Maverick Handley as depth options who have MLB experience.
