Bringing Up Bates‘ Michaela & Brandon Keilen Started Fostering Two Sons In May 2025
Viewers were introduced to Michaela and the Bates family through various reality shows, including Bringing Up Bates and United Bates of America. As fans know, Michaela is the second child and first daughter of Gil and Kelly Bates.
In her personal life, Michaela married Brandon Keilen. The two would become foster parents to two young boys in May 2025.
Recently, the couple has faced fervent questions about the possibility of adopting their two foster sons. In a recent video on YouTube, Brandon shared, “Life continues to be an adventure there, and I know somebody had made some comments somewhere in reference to an adoption choice.”
While assuring that the boys were loved, Brandon alluded to the issue being out of their hands. He noted, “We’re loving the boys as long as we can, but that’s not something that’s in our court at this point in time.”
Michaela herself later added to the discussion. As she shared, “I feel like we get a lot of comments through social media, you know, ‘I hope the boys stay with you forever’ or, ‘It’s time for you to send them back home.’ This is our first time doing it, but we’re just a home to love the boys as long as they need it.”
Similar to Brandon, Michaela emphasized that the situation depends on outside factors. She noted, “I mean, it’s not really up to us what happens. We’re just here to be here for them and to support them.”
Brandon Highlighted That, With Some Things Being Out Of Their Hands, They Are Not Sure Where The Family’s ‘Story Is Going To Go’
As Michaela continued, she noted that many comments seem to come from people unfamiliar with the foster care system. She also noted that there were some parts of the story that they kept secret from fans for privacy.
Despite the questions, Michaela noted that fans have also been sharing their support and thanked them for their prayers. Ultimately, she shared the hope that she and Brandon were offering a happy home for the boys.

As the couple noted, they were “here for [their foster sons] as long as they need.” Micahela shared that, “We hope that they feel loved and valued and like they belong for however long they are here.”
Brandon also emphasized that final decisions ultimately come from the Department of Child Services. He noted, “We’re just available to love the boys as long as that’s necessary. We don’t know where their story is going to go, where this is going to end up, but we are very grateful for this season of time. It’s changed us, it’s changed me [and] it’s changed how we’ve had to live life in relation to decisions we make as a couple.”
