Team Canada improved to a record of five wins and zero losses at the 2026 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Hockey Championships in Fribourg, Switzerland on Friday. Canada defeated Slovenia 3-1 and are one of four teams in the tournament undefeated to date. The other three are Slovakia, Finland and Switzerland.
In Canada’s win over Slovenia, Team Canada was led in scoring by Detroit Red Wings centre Emmitt Finnie of Lethbridge, Alberta. Finnie had a multi-point game as he had one goal and one assist for two points.
Team Canada had one goal in each period. Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk of Winnipeg, Manitoba opened the scoring at 11:07 of the first period, and Ottawa Senators centre Dylan Cozens of Whitehorse, Yukon scored the game-winning goal at 13:14 of the second period, before Finnie had a third period insurance marker.
On Sunday, Canada faces Slovakia in a battle of undefeated teams. It should be noted that even though Canada and Slovakia do not have a loss, they do not have the maximum number of points available. That is because Slovakia only got two points by beating Slovenia 5-4 in a shootout on Tuesday, and Canada only got two points by beating Norway 6-5 in overtime on Thursday.
