Team Canada has won the 2026 Canada Cup in women’s softball. On Sunday in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada defeated China in the championship final by a score of 7-3.
This was an impressive comeback for Canada as they trailed 2-0 and 3-2 at times during the game. However, the Canadians came through with a terrific seventh inning as they scored five runs. The key Canadian contributor was Kelsey Harshman, who hit a three-run home run to put Canada up 5-3. Emma Entzminger of Victoria, British Columbia had a triple, and Grace Messmer of Surrey, British Columbia had two doubles.
On the mound, Team Canada used three pitchers. They were Sara Groenewegen of White Rock, British Columbia, Dawn Bodrug of Georgetown, Ontario, and Morgan Reimer of Langley, British Columbia.
In the words of Canadian sports broadcaster Peter Loubardias, Canada’s performance over the past week in Surrey was simply “dominant”. In the nine games for Team Canada in Surrey over the week, Canada outscored their opponents by a combined score of 100-12.
This is an exciting time for Canadian women’s softball. They recently qualified for the 2027 World Cup Finals in Redcliffe, Australia when they beat Chinese Taipei 8-7 in a qualifying tournament in Prague, Czech Republic.
Canada is also trying to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, after women’s softball was controversially not part of the Olympic program at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Canada won the bronze medal in women’s softball.
