The picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala bore witness to a historic night of cricket on Sunday, 2026. In the 61st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, a packed house watched an iconic, 18-year-old tournament record shatter into pieces during a high-stakes clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). While the evening ultimately belonged to Bengaluru’s collective brilliance, a young Australian sensation ensured his name would be etched permanently into the IPL history books.

Cooper Connolly enters the IPL record books by surpassing Sanath Jayasuriya’s elite milestone

Rising Australian star Cooper Connolly achieved the unthinkable by overtaking Sri Lankan batting legend Sanath Jayasuriya for the most sixes hit by a player in their debut IPL season. Representing Punjab Kings, Connolly walked into a high-pressure situation and swung his way into cricketing folklore. Chasing a mammoth target, the left-hander played a quickfire cameo of 37 runs off just 22 deliveries, laced with three fours and three spectacular sixes. Operating at a strike rate of 168.18, Connolly’s fearless approach provided a glimmer of hope to the home side following a devastating top-order collapse.

With those three maximums, Connolly took his tournament tally to an astonishing 32 sixes, eclipsing the previous debut-season record held by Jayasuriya. Back in the inaugural edition in 2008, Jayasuriya had set the tournament ablaze by smashing 31 sixes for Mumbai Indians, ending as the season’s third-highest run-getter with 514 runs.

Connolly’s debut campaign has been nothing short of a revelation for PBKS. The young prodigy has emerged as his team’s leading run-scorer, accumulating 473 runs across 12 innings at an incredible average of 47.30 and a blistering strike rate of 162.54. Alongside his 32 sixes, he has cracked 39 boundaries, with a highest score of 107* highlighting his immense potential on the global stage.

RCB storm into the IPL 2026 playoffs with a commanding victory over PBKS

While Connolly celebrated an individual milestone, Royal Challengers Bengaluru stole the match honours, securing a commanding 23-run victory to officially seal their spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs. Batting first, RCB piled on a massive 222/4 in their allotted 20 overs. The foundation was laid by a vintage half-century from Virat Kohli, who anchored the innings with a steady 58 off 37 balls, featuring 4 fours and three sixes. Devdutt Padikkal provided explosive support from the upper order, hammering 45 off 25 balls.

However, it was Venkatesh Iyer who walked away with the Player of the Match award after playing a breathtaking, unbeaten knock of 73* from just 40 deliveries. Striking at 182.50, Iyer tore through the Punjab bowling attack with eight fours and four sixes. Tim David provided the final flourish with a 12-ball 28, taking the team past the 220-mark despite Harpreet Brar‘s disciplined spell of 2/35.

In reply, Punjab’s chase got off to a disastrous start. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s masterclass in swing bowling dismantled the PBKS top order early, removing opener Priyansh Arya for a duck and Prabhsimran Singh for just 2. Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply for 1, leaving Punjab reeling at 19/3.

Resilience from Suryansh Shedge (35 off 22) and Marcus Stoinis (37 off 25) kept the fight alive, but it was Shashank Singh who truly terrified the RCB dugout. Shashank played a sensational, lone-warrior knock, blasting 56 off 27 balls at a strike rate of 207.40, clearing the ropes four times. Unfortunately for Punjab, Rasikh Salam‘s brilliant death bowling (3/36) proved too much to handle. Punjab Kings were eventually restricted to 199/8 as RCB players triggered wild celebrations on the field, marching confidently into the postseason.
