Chennai Super Kings (CSK) seemed to have finally found their rhythm in IPL 2026 after bouncing back with two consecutive wins following a shaky start to the season. Just as momentum began to build, the campaign has been jolted by a major setback. One of their most crucial players – who had been instrumental in providing early breakthroughs – has now been ruled out of the tournament, dealing a significant blow to the team’s balance and plans going forward.

In what comes as a huge concern for the franchise, Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a serious injury sustained during CSK’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14 at Chepauk.
The left-arm pacer picked up the injury during a crucial stage of the match. While running in to deliver the final ball of the 17th over, Khaleel experienced discomfort in his right thigh. Although he initially attempted to continue, the pain proved too severe, forcing him to pull up midway and seek medical attention. He eventually had to walk off the field, leaving his over incomplete, with Gurjapneet Singh stepping in to finish it.
Subsequent medical examinations revealed the severity of the issue. Khaleel has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 quadriceps tear, described as a high-grade partial tear involving the right rectus femoris tendon, along with a complete tear of the direct head of the muscle. Given the extent of the damage, he has been advised a rehabilitation period of 10 to 12 weeks.
This timeline effectively ends his participation in IPL 2026. The injury is particularly unfortunate considering Khaleel had featured in all five matches for CSK this season and was a key component of their pace attack. Though his wicket tally stood at two, his role extended beyond numbers, often setting the tone early with disciplined new-ball spells.
How CSK will deal with the absence of star pacer?
Replacing Khaleel will not be straightforward for CSK, especially at a stage where team combinations begin to settle and consistency becomes vital. His left-arm angle and ability to swing the new ball offered a unique dimension to the bowling attack, something not easily replicated.
A like-for-like option in the squad is Mukesh Choudhary, who brings a similar left-arm seam variation and has previously shown the ability to strike in the powerplay. However, returning from injury and immediately delivering under pressure is a challenge in itself.
Gurjapneet, who was already in the scheme of things, could see an expanded role. While he has shown promise, stepping into a frontline responsibility in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL will test his temperament and execution.
Another interesting option is Ramakrishna Ghosh, a breakout domestic performer for Maharashtra. As a bowling all-rounder, he offers added batting depth, which could help CSK balance their XI better. However, relying on relatively inexperienced players to fill a crucial gap carries its own risks.
