DWTS has seen countless celebrities take the stage over the years. However, after getting a bit of a bad reputation, they are being more picky about who they let dance their way to the win. Keep reading to find out more about what the show hopes to achieve and what they are trying to leave behind.
DWTS Becomes A Rehab
Dancing with the Stars has been on for a whopping 35 seasons. This means that approximately 400 celebrities have tried to compete to take home the coveted trophy. These stars have ranged from actors to athletes and, more recently, even social media personalities like Alix Earle. However, while the show has been doing better about staying modern, that hasn’t always been the case.
There have been several celebrities who have joined the show past their prime. Or, celebrities have been on the show who have a need of some sort. Whether it’s coming back from something bad or redeeming their name, they had a reason for being on the show other than for the love of dance.
According to Reality TV Network, the producers actually know this and realize that it was bad for their image.
“I admit there were some seasons past where maybe it felt like people that have gone away, and it’s like a rehab for a career,” Casting Director for the show, Deena Katz, says.
She even admits that they were casting too far behind the times.
“And really, I think what [we were] missing is the relevance,” she says.
Changing The Future
Now, they are actively trying to do this. Incorporating more social media stars, as mentioned above, is one way. Another is making sure it’s people who are out in the world right now. For example, Maura Higgins, who is very well known for being on The Traitors last season and in the Love Island universe for years, has been cast this season. As has Tyler Cameron, and while he has been out of Bachelor Nation for a bit, he just got his own reality TV show. So, both of these are considered relevant for the new season.
Apparently, that trend will continue as more names are revealed.
“You look at this season coming up — and I’m not going to say who’s on the season coming up — but there’s so many people that have really big day jobs right now, and they’re taking a moment out of it, or while they’re doing it, to come on and do this,” Deena says.
With the definition of celebrity growing every year, the show has one goal. That is to make a viewer come for their favorite celebrity. But then end up learning about everyone else dancing their hearts out.
“The idea is that you come on for something, but then you fall in love with somebody else, and that’s the balance.”
